Schumacher Links Piastri Changes to McLaren Management Tensions

Ralf Schumacher has suggested that Oscar Piastri’s recent changes in his management team may indicate underlying tensions within McLaren during last season. Speaking on Sky Deutschland, Schumacher emphasized the importance for McLaren to ensure greater stability around Piastri as the team prepares for the 2026 racing season.

Tensions Between Mark Webber and McLaren Leadership

Rumors have circulated about a strained relationship between Mark Webber and McLaren CEO Zak Brown, fueled by claims that Webber felt sidelined as a ‘number two’ figure. Schumacher believes this dynamic may have contributed to the situation.

I have heard that it was very important for McLaren that Piastri has another manager to create more peace,

Schumacher remarked.

I believe in any case that this is a result of the fact that Mark Webber may have gone a little too far over the past year,

he added.

Perhaps he thought too much about his own situation at Red Bull and saw things that were not there – namely that McLaren would favor one of his drivers.

McLaren wanted to go for the title with both drivers, and that of course brings some unrest.

Opportunities and Risks for a Young Driver

Schumacher pointed out that McLaren entrusted Piastri with a significant chance to prove himself, acknowledging the risks involved with relying on a young driver.

McLaren has given Oscar Piastri a great opportunity. The team has taken a risk with a young driver. It would be harder if the problem were with the driver. We can only speculate about it.

Piastri’s Response and Team Support Developments

In a recent interview with Australia’s 7 News, Piastri took a measured stance, hinting at ongoing adjustments for the upcoming season beyond last year’s contentious “papaya rules.” Over the winter break, he reconnected with former Prema engineer Pedro Matos to strengthen his technical support, alongside expanding the role of mental performance coach Emma Murray trackside.

Piastri commented,

“I’m still figuring that out. Some of the lessons from last year weren’t necessarily about driving itself – they were broader, about how I approach weekends and the season.”

From a driving perspective, testing is critical this year because the cars are so different. It’s about learning what the car likes, what the power unit likes, and experimenting more. So it’s about developing tools both on and off track.

Dismissal of Allegations of Bias in the 2025 Title Battle

When asked if McLaren had been biased against him during the 2025 championship contest, Piastri firmly rejected the claim.

There were certainly no bad intentions last year,

he said.

At no point were there any bad intentions or sabotage, despite what some people suggested.

We’ve worked very hard in the off-season to tidy up what we didn’t get right, and I’m confident we can do a better job in 2026 overall.

Outlook for McLaren and Piastri Heading Into 2026

These developments indicate McLaren’s commitment to resolving internal challenges as they aim for competitive success in the next season. Strengthening Piastri’s backing team and addressing management frictions may prove pivotal as the team seeks to maximize its performance and championship potential.
