Scott Dixon Honors Justin Wilson’s Family with Generous Race Winnings Gift

Scott Dixon, the six-time IndyCar champion, paid tribute to the late British driver Justin Wilson by donating his 2016 Watkins Glen race winnings to Wilson’s family. This heartfelt gesture came a year after Wilson tragically passed away following a crash at the 2015 ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway, reflecting Dixon’s deep respect and remembrance of his fellow racer.

Scott Dixon’s Tribute Through Race Winnings Donation

After winning the 2016 IndyCar race at Watkins Glen, Dixon announced he and his wife, Emma, had decided to give his race earnings to the family of Justin Wilson. While Chip Ganassi Racing‘s team reportedly earned $40,000 from Dixon’s victory, the exact portion he received was not disclosed. Dixon’s gesture was meant to honor Wilson’s memory and provide support to his loved ones.

Dixon fondly recalled his last race battle with Wilson at Watkins Glen in 2010, describing it as a memorable and competitive experience. This reflection showed how Wilson remained on Dixon’s mind during the Watkins Glen weekend, influencing his decision to pay tribute in this way.

Remembering Wilson’s Impact and Milestones

Dixon emphasized the significance of Wilson’s achievements, particularly highlighting Wilson’s first win at Watkins Glen, which also marked a milestone victory for Dale Coyne Racing after the unification of the IRL and Champ Car series. Dixon said,

“Last time (in 2010), we had a good battle here, and he kicked my butt. It’s a place that he got, I believe, his first win, maybe in the combined IndyCar and (it was) Dale Coyne’s first win, and definitely a milestone. I was thinking about Justin a lot this weekend.” —Scott Dixon, Chip Ganassi Racing Driver

Wilson’s career was marked by perseverance and notable accomplishments, including his time racing in Formula 1 in 2003 for Minardi and Jaguar, before moving to the United States to compete in Champ Car, which later became IndyCar.

The 2015 Pocono Tragedy and Wilson’s Legacy

Wilson’s fatal accident occurred during the 2015 ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway. On lap 179, a crash by race leader Sage Karam resulted in the nose cone from Karam’s car flying onto the track. Wilson, attempting to avoid the debris, was struck on the helmet by the flying nose cone, which rendered him unconscious. His car then collided with the inside barrier while still at high speed. Despite immediate medical attention and being airlifted, Wilson succumbed to his injuries and died on August 24, 2015.

Commemorating Wilson’s Life and Ongoing Recognition

On the 10th anniversary of Wilson’s passing, August 24, 2025, IndyCar and associated media marked the occasion by honoring Wilson’s enduring impact on the sport. Known fondly as Badass Wilson in the racing community, his legacy continues to resonate among fans and peers alike.

In tribute, CoForce, a digital media production company, announced a documentary in development that will explore Wilson’s life and career. The project is being produced in collaboration with IndyCar journalist Marshall Pruett, providing an in-depth look at the driver’s journey and enduring influence on motorsport.

Scott Dixon’s public recognition and generous act reflect not only his admiration for Justin Wilson but also highlight the close-knit nature of the IndyCar community, where respect and remembrance for fallen drivers remain a vital part of the sport’s culture.
