Shane van Gisbergen threw a playful jab at Connor Zilisch’s pace following Friday’s O’Reilly Auto Parts Series qualifying at Circuit of the Americas (COTA), where Zilisch claimed pole position. The New Zealander will still start on the front row for Sunday’s Cup Series race, setting the stage for an intense battle.
Van Gisbergen is aiming to secure his sixth consecutive road course victory at COTA, which would tie him with Jeff Gordon for the longest streak of road course wins in NASCAR history. Additionally, this achievement would place him alongside Chase Elliott for the most road course victories among active drivers.
Teammates Preparing for Another Close Duel at COTA
Van Gisbergen faces familiar competition from his teammate Connor Zilisch, who has previously bested him twice on road courses. Both drivers will represent their teams at COTA: Zilisch behind the wheel of the No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet and Van Gisbergen piloting the No. 9 car. Their rivalry is expected to intensify on Saturday and throughout Sunday’s race.
After Zilisch edged out Van Gisbergen for pole position, the Kiwi driver commented to reporters,
“My lap was good, but that little bugger is pretty quick. Hopefully we race him tomorrow. My long run speed was good in the race runs we did in practice. Who knows? Up the front is a good place to start.” ?Shane van Gisbergen, Driver
Connor Zilisch Confident in His Abilities Against Van Gisbergen
Connor Zilisch spoke candidly about his ongoing challenge with Shane van Gisbergen. The two have clashed multiple times in the past year, with Zilisch winning races at Sonoma and Watkins Glen International. Their encounter at COTA will be their first road course competition since those events.
“I got the chance to race against him a few times toe-to-toe in the O’Reilly Series, and I think those cars are a little bit different for him, so it’s not a complete comparison, but I feel like I’ve been able to run with him in those,” Zilisch said.
“We were teammates in the Corvette in the [Daytona] 24 Hours, and I felt like I was as fast as him in that. So, personally, I feel like I can do it—but putting an entire race together and being as consistent and not making mistakes like him is where it’s all going to come together,” he added.
Van Gisbergen’s Track Record and Strategic Strengths
While Zilisch is still seeking a breakthrough on the Cup Series stage after a crash in Atlanta and a 33rd-place finish in the Daytona 500, Van Gisbergen has already made a mark with his first top-10 finish at Echopark Speedway. Notably, COTA was the sole road course where Van Gisbergen did not win last year, adding an intriguing dynamic to this weekend’s race.
Daniel Suarez of Spire Motorsports recently highlighted Van Gisbergen’s skill in managing tire wear, which is especially crucial at COTA given the increased horsepower and track demands. Suarez emphasized that tire conservation will be a key factor playing to Van Gisbergen’s advantage during the event.
Implications for Road Course Crown and Upcoming Races
The confrontation between Shane van Gisbergen and Connor Zilisch at COTA holds significant implications for the championship and their reputations as top road course competitors. Van Gisbergen’s pursuit of a historic consecutive win streak and Zilisch’s determination to prove himself at the Cup level create an electrifying atmosphere for fans.
As the race unfolds, both drivers’ strategies and consistency will likely shape the outcome, with tire management and error-free racing playing pivotal roles. Observers will be watching closely to see if Van Gisbergen can finally conquer COTA and extend his dominance, or if Zilisch can capitalize on his pole position to secure a major victory.
