Kevin Harvick Praises Shane van Gisbergen’s NASCAR Playoff Chances After Strong Oval Performance

Shane van Gisbergen drew attention from Kevin Harvick following his performance at Richmond Raceway last weekend. The New Zealander secured a 14th-place finish, matching his best result on an oval track in this year’s NASCAR Cup Series. This solid showing highlights van Gisbergen’s growing adaptability beyond his well-known road course skills.

Potential for Playoff Success on Traditional Tracks

While van Gisbergen is widely recognized for his strength on road courses, consistent performances on more conventional NASCAR tracks could bolster his chances in the playoffs. Harvick expressed confidence that if van Gisbergen remains competitive through the early rounds, particularly by achieving finishes around 14th or 15th place, he could advance further in the postseason.

I think that P15-18, P19th average running, finishing position in a round will typically advance you through the first round. So, if he can get those P14, P15th finishes in the first round, with the points that he has earned, he could make it through that first round,

Harvick explained, via Kevin Harvick’s Happy Hour.

Harvick also highlighted van Gisbergen’s strong prospects on road courses as a major advantage heading into the Charlotte ROVAL, implying van Gisbergen could become a favorite if he reaches the second round.

Why would you bet against him? Why would you not pick him on a road course? I don’t know. Why would he not be the favorite for the ROVAL, if he makes it to the second round.

Support Growing from Fellow Analysts

Harvick’s positive appraisal is echoed by his co-host, Mamba Smith, who remains optimistic about van Gisbergen’s continued development and learning curve on ovals.

At the beginning of the year, we talked about what we thought this season might turn into for different people. When we were talking about SVG, I said I almost have him going through the Round of Eight,

Smith said.

I said, I feel like he’s going to be able to figure out. He’s going to win a couple of road courses. I feel like he would figure out the ovals. It’s getting closer to that.

Like, I’m not going to stamp my name on it, but like he’s — they’re getting better. He doesn’t even have 100 NASCAR starts, period.

Strong Foundation Heading into the Playoffs

With four victories this season, van Gisbergen has already built a solid foundation as he approaches the NASCAR playoffs. His goal is to keep improving on traditional tracks, and the upcoming race at Daytona International Speedway provides another key opportunity to gain experience on ovals.

As the 2025 season evolves with a competitive and uncertain championship landscape, Shane van Gisbergen remains one of the most intriguing drivers to observe. Should he maintain his progress on oval circuits while leveraging his established road racing expertise, he could gain a meaningful edge against fellow contenders.
