Shane van Gisbergen Scores Career-Best Oval Finish at EchoPark

On Sunday at EchoPark Speedway in Hampton, Georgia, Shane van Gisbergen delivered his finest oval racing performance by finishing sixth in the Autotrader 400. The New Zealand driver, in his second full season competing in the NASCAR Cup Series, is focused on improving his oval racing skills to complement his established road course strengths.

Driving the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 for Trackhouse Racing, van Gisbergen overcame two separate slides into the frontstretch grass during the race, including one caused by another driver and another by his own misjudgment. Despite these setbacks, he rebounded to secure his first top-10 finish of the 2026 season and his best-ever oval result.

Challenges Faced and Lessons Learned on the Track

Van Gisbergen’s day was marked by the challenges of adapting to the recently redesigned Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. Early in the race, he struggled with a loose setup that caused tire wear and forced him to drop to the back of the pack. Adjustments by crew chief Stephen Doran and his team helped stabilize the car, allowing van Gisbergen to race competitively in the second stage and onwards.

He recounted the difficulties after the race:

“We’re really still learning the new car. I think it’s a bit different, and we started the race really loose. Couldn’t hardly hang on. Like, I went to the back. I started good, then blew the rear (tires) off, and then Stephen (Doran, crew chief) and the guys made good adjustments. And from the second stage, I could race, and it felt like I had a good day. But got involved in a bit of stuff and made a mistake myself, and got sick of passing cars. But it was awesome fun.” – Shane van Gisbergen, NASCAR Cup Series Driver

His first excursion off the track happened just as Stage 2 ended, when Kyle Larson abruptly moved from the top lane to the bottom alongside van Gisbergen, who was contesting third place. Larson spun and hit the SAFER barrier, while van Gisbergen slid into the grass but managed to keep his car controlled. A similar slide occurred 39 laps later as he lost traction near the top 10.

Building Confidence Through Experience

Reflecting on his performance, van Gisbergen noted that his previous experience at the Georgia oval contributed to his confidence and comfort during the race. However, he admitted that pushing aggressively sometimes backfired, especially when attempting moves in three-wide battles on the bottom lane without enough support.

“I felt confident here last time we were here, too, so kind of built on that, and, yeah, felt comfortable making moves. Got too adventurous sometimes, going three-wide bottom, and then you get no help. But just more and more comfortable with these races the more I do them.” – Shane van Gisbergen, NASCAR Cup Series Driver

Momentum Building After a Rocky Start to the Season

Van Gisbergen’s strong finish at EchoPark followed a promising start to the season, including a competitive showing at the Daytona 500. Despite being involved in a crash late in that race, which relegated him to 30th, he demonstrated his ability to run consistently near the front. Currently 16th in the points standings, his team is motivated to accumulate enough points to qualify for the playoffs.

“We’ve got a good bunch of people here, and it’s fun prepping during the week, and then at the race track, it’s good vibes. I really enjoy the team I work with, and we’re in a position where we need to accumulate points every week to make this Chase. So last week was pretty disappointing, and then, yeah, great to get sixth today. It’s a huge amount of points. Pissed at myself. I was fourth going into the last corner and let the two guys (Carson Hocevar and Daniel Suárez) inside me. But it’s a pretty good day.” – Shane van Gisbergen, NASCAR Cup Series Driver

Looking Ahead to Circuit of The Americas

Following EchoPark, the NASCAR Cup Series heads to Circuit of The Americas (COTA), a road course where van Gisbergen has competed but not yet won. With fewer road courses on the schedule this season, van Gisbergen is intent on maximizing his points haul on ovals and continuing to show strong performances where he tends to excel.

“I need to do better on these (oval) weekends and keep scoring those points. There’s less road courses in the main season, so for me, it’s all points accumulation, and we’re fighting hard to get stage points and that’s a huge positive. We didn’t really get stage points on ovals last year, so we’re in a lot better position, which is awesome. And the road courses, again, are like holidays for us. Just go and have fun and score as many points as we can.” – Shane van Gisbergen, NASCAR Cup Series Driver

Van Gisbergen’s strong adaptation to the updated Camaro and improved oval performance signal potential growth in this challenging facet of the NASCAR Cup Series. His determination to convert this progress into consistent results could have a significant impact on his playoff hopes and Trackhouse Racing’s competitive standing in 2026.
