Somkiat Chantra Eyes WorldSBK Return After Surgery Boost

Somkiat Chantra is preparing for a return to WorldSBK competition after suffering arm injuries during the preseason. The Thai rider missed the first round due to surgeries on both arms sustained in a crash at Sepang in January, but he is determined to race again starting at round two in Portimao.

Following his absence, Tetsuta Nagashima has been confirmed as Chantra’s replacement for the opening round. Despite this setback, Chantra remains hopeful about rejoining the Honda HRC team soon.

Recovery Progress and Rider’s Outlook After Surgery

Chantra shared his thoughts in a video posted on the Honda HRC YouTube channel, explaining his situation after the injury.

“Like everyone knows, I broke my arm and the doctor said to me ‘Better to don’t go to round one and try to be [at] round two,”

he said, expressing cautious optimism.

Throughout his recovery, Chantra has maintained close communication with the team management, including Honda HRC Team Manager Yuji Mori and crew chief Tetsuya Sasaki, to keep them updated on his healing process. His progress has been encouraging so far.

In an official press release, Chantra provided further insight into his rehabilitation:

“My recovery is progressing well and I’m happy with how things are going post-surgery,”

he affirmed.

He noted that the removal of protective gear and stitches was an important milestone, even though he still requires more time before riding again.

“For now, the focus is on calmly continuing my recovery and making sure I’m fully ready before getting back on the bike,”

he added.

Adapting to the Honda HRC Team and Preparing for WorldSBK Challenges

Chantra reflected on his initial experiences with the Honda factory team, which he considers an important step in his racing career. He described the atmosphere during the first test at Jerez as welcoming and supportive.

“From the moment I entered the garage, I felt welcome and the atmosphere immediately felt like a family,”

he said.

The transition from riding a standard CBR1000RR-R to the WorldSBK version was a major change for the rookie rider, but the experience was mostly positive. During the test, Chantra focused on understanding the bike’s dynamics and worked collaboratively with the team to improve key areas such as his braking and shifting techniques.

Determination to Return and Contribute to Team Success

Despite his disappointment in missing the first round, Chantra remains fully committed to following medical advice and returning stronger.

“I’m obviously disappointed not to be able to race at the opening round, but following the doctors’ advice is the right thing to do. I miss the team and am fully focused on doing all I can to return as soon as possible,”

he said.

He expressed his gratitude toward the Honda HRC team for their ongoing support and stated his eagerness to help the team progress once back on track.

“I’d like to thank everyone at Honda HRC for their support, and I’m really looking forward to returning and contributing to the team’s progress,”

Chantra added.

Looking Ahead: What Chantra’s Return Means for WorldSBK

Somkiat Chantra’s expected comeback at the Portimao round represents a crucial moment in his rookie WorldSBK season and for the Honda HRC squad. His recovery following complex surgeries and the focused rehabilitation plan highlight the resilience required in high-level motorcycle racing.

Chantra’s successful return could bolster the team’s competitive edge and provide him with valuable experience as he continues adapting to WorldSBK machinery. Fans and teammates alike will be watching closely to see how quickly he regains race fitness and contributes to Honda’s championship campaign.
