Supercars Declares Major Status Amid Adelaide MotoGP Buzz

This November, while the Australian motorsport scene shares attention with the international stars at Formula 1’s Albert Park, a new dynamic emerges in Adelaide where the MotoGP event and Supercars races will take place on separate weekends. The Adelaide MotoGP Supercars event marks a significant addition to the calendar, with the bike race scheduled just before the Supercars Grand Final. Despite MotoGP’s surprising arrival in Adelaide, Supercars remains confident in its dominant position within the region’s racing hierarchy.

Government and Promoters Secure Long-Term Motorsport Commitments

The South Australian Government recently finalized a contract with the Supercars organization securing the Grand Final event in Adelaide through 2034. This agreement reflects a firm commitment to maintaining the city’s place as a premier motorsport destination. The South Australian Motorsport Board, responsible for promoting the Supercars event, will also manage the upcoming MotoGP race, signaling coordinated efforts to elevate Adelaide’s reputation across different motorsport disciplines.

Supercars Continue To Draw Record Crowds

Last year’s Supercars Grand Final in Adelaide drew an impressive 285,700 attendees over four days, including a record 102,200 on race day alone. These figures highlight the championship’s strong local following and successful event management. In comparison, the 2025 MotoGP race at Phillip Island attracted approximately 91,245 spectators across three days. Organizers expect the move of MotoGP to the Adelaide city location could significantly increase attendance, potentially benefiting both events through joint promotions.

Distinct Fanbases But Potential Synergies Between Events

Supercars CEO Shane Warburton emphasized the clear differences between the core audiences for Supercars and MotoGP but also noted the value of promoting the events together to boost overall engagement. Reflecting on Adelaide’s capacity to host major festivals and sporting events such as Gather Round and LIV Golf, Warburton expressed optimism about the broader festival atmosphere the city is cultivating over the November period.

“Supercars is a massive entity in Australia,”

Warburton told Speedcafe.

“I’ve got no doubt MotoGP will be impressive in Adelaide, but as a sport, coming off the back of Bathurst and the Gold Coast and the momentum and what we’ve seen in the Finals Series, and our plans to continue to grow, there’s absolutely no doubt in my mind that we’ll continue to be the major act.”

“I think the Premier has been at pains to say that in the press conference and certainly the assurances that he gave to us, that this [Grand Final] is the jewel in the crown over the month.”

— Shane Warburton, Supercars CEO

“I think it’s fundamentally different in terms of the core audiences,”

he added.

“They’re the promoter, so they will work, whether it’s combined ticket or I have no idea what is in their mind… but it’s theirs to work on and make sure it continues to be as big as it should be.”

Future Opportunities for Supercars at Phillip Island Arise with MotoGP Move

The relocation of the MotoGP event from Phillip Island to Adelaide could open possibilities for Supercars to revisit its former venue in Victoria. Supercars has not held a race at Phillip Island since 2019 due to logistical challenges such as location remoteness, high track fees, and outdated facilities. Victorian Government support would likely be essential for Supercars to return, complementing its current two Victorian appearances at Albert Park and Sandown.

“We’ve only got a limited number of rounds, and we want to be in their best facilities, and if that opens a door, well we can have that conversation,”

Warburton said regarding Phillip Island.

“November is a good time of year for us. It really depends if the calendars line up and if there’s a desire to explore it, but we’re certainly open to talking about that.”
