The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season has proven difficult for Ty Gibbs, as he strives to qualify for the playoffs again after making them for the first time in 2024. The 22-year-old driver, competing with the No. 54 car, needs a win at the regular-season finale in Daytona to secure back-to-back postseason appearances. Despite 25 races alongside first-year crew chief Tyler Allen, Gibbs has yet to claim his first career victory after 112 starts, although he has earned six top 10s and four top 5s this season.
Frustrations Surface Amid Radio Interference During Richmond Race
As the only Joe Gibbs Racing driver not currently in the playoffs, tensions have been mounting throughout the season. This strain was evident previously at Iowa during a tense radio exchange between Gibbs and JGR Competition Director Chris Gabehart, who has also acted as Gibbs’ de facto crew chief recently. However, during Saturday night’s race at Richmond Raceway, their communication appeared more cooperative, as Gibbs confirmed his understanding of Gabehart’s upcoming pit strategy call with the words,
“Yep, right with you. Having fun.”
Shortly afterward, unexpected interference from Corey Heim’s crew chief broadcast over the 23XI Racing radio was picked up on Gibbs’ channel, creating confusion. Gibbs humorously highlighted the disruption, saying,
“I got Bootie Barker’s radio channel on mine as well,”
followed by,
“We running some split radios or what?”
Gabehart admitted uncertainty, responding,
“Boy, I don’t know about that. That’s some sort of frequency issue somebody above me will have to figure out.”
Gibbs then joked,
“Tell Bootie to shut up. He’s screaming on my radio.”
When asked if this was the first time he heard the interference, Gibbs confirmed, “I’ve been hearing him.”
Impact of Radio Issues on Ty Gibbs’ Performance and Season Outlook
Despite the radio interference, Gibbs finished 18th at Richmond, marking his best top-20 finish in four races. The communication obstacles highlighted the kind of challenges that can disrupt focus in a competitive setting, especially when playoff contention remains uncertain. With the 2025 season winding down, Gibbs and his team will need to overcome these hurdles if they aim to replicate last year’s playoff success.
