Ty Gibbs, who joined the NASCAR Cup Series over three years ago, is determined to bounce back after difficult seasons with Joe Gibbs Racing. Despite an impressive record in the Xfinity Series, including a championship win in 2022 with seven victories, his transition to the Cup Series has yet to yield a race win. As he prepares for the 2026 season, Gibbs aims to build on his experience and improve his results amid rising competition.
From Xfinity Success to Cup Series Struggles
Gibbs experienced significant success early in his career, securing 12 wins in 66 starts in the Xfinity Series, highlighted by a full-time championship campaign in 2022 driving the No. 54 Toyota. However, his progress in the NASCAR Cup Series has been slower, with 123 starts without a victory. While he qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 2024 and finished 15th in the standings—an improvement over his 18th place rookie finish—last season saw a setback. He failed to make the playoffs and dropped to 19th overall, prompting reflection and renewed focus.
Reflections on the 2025 Season and Hopes for the Future
Addressing his recent challenges, Gibbs told RACER,
2025 wasn’t really a great year for us, unfortunately. We made some changes towards the end and we were running really strong at the last couple races of the year. We’re starting off this year kind of with the same deal, so I’m real excited for this year and to see how it goes. It’s all part of the process.
He added,
I’m only 23, so in my fourth full-time year there has been a lot learned and want to be looking for success in 2026. I’m going to go hammer down and work hard and try to outwork these guys and beat them. Hopefully we can knock a couple of race wins off and maybe even more that,
showing his strong determination to change course.

Adjusting to New Competition Formats and Race Strategies
The Cup Series’ return to a challenging format demands consistent performance week after week, something Gibbs recognizes he must improve. Although last season was tough, he remains optimistic that overcoming obstacles will strengthen his competitive edge. His focus is currently on the upcoming Daytona 500, where in three prior appearances he achieved two top-20 finishes, marking it as a promising opportunity to gain momentum early in the season. After Daytona, he plans to concentrate on tracks like Atlanta and Circuit of the Americas (COTA), where he feels well-prepared.
Building Strength Through Diverse Racing Experience
During the offseason, Gibbs dedicated time to dirt track racing, following in the footsteps of drivers such as Christopher Bell and Kyle Larson, who have translated dirt track skills into NASCAR success. Although his efforts have yet to pay off fully on the Cup circuit, this experience is part of a broader strategy to refine his approach and racecraft. The intense competition under the playoff format may require Gibbs to prioritize consistent finishes over risky moves, potentially opening the door to his first Cup Series win.
