Tyler Reddick propelled Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing to a remarkable NASCAR milestone by winning the race at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) on Sunday, marking his third straight victory to start the season. This achievement makes Reddick the first driver in NASCAR Cup Series history, which dates back to 1949, to win the first three races of a season.
Starting from the pole position, Reddick controlled the DuraMAX Texas Grand Prix, leading 58 of the 95 laps on the challenging 2.4-mile, 20-turn road course. Despite a fierce late-race challenge from Shane van Gisbergen, the leading road course competitor, Reddick maintained a 3.944-second advantage at the finish line, demonstrating his dominance on a track where no driver has previously begun a season with three consecutive victories.
Road Course Rivalry and Van Gisbergen’s Pursuit of More Records
Van Gisbergen, fresh off victories in the previous five road and street circuit races, aimed to tie Jeff Gordon’s record for six consecutive road course wins. He praised Reddick’s performance, stating,
“His driving was immaculate and his car was very good, too,”
while also admitting,
“It’s weird to be disappointed with second.”
Reddick echoed the significance of prevailing over such a strong opponent, saying,
“It’s so fitting. We get going at the end there and I’m leading and there’s SVG, the guy I’ve been trying to beat for a while now. Just to be able to outlast him there and hold on for the win is just incredible.”
Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin Celebrate a Historic Milestone
Michael Jordan, who co-owns 23XI Racing alongside Denny Hamlin, was visibly energized on pit road, celebrating the team’s historic achievement. Reflecting on the pressure Reddick faced, Jordan remarked,
“Tyler came in with the most pressure. Everybody expected him or he had a chance to win three in a row, and that’s the hardest one to win. He kept to his strategy, and man, the guys put together a great car.”
Jordan also credited Hamlin’s role in building the team, noting,
“I just put up the money. I think Denny has done an unbelievable job.”
Their partnership has transformed 23XI Racing’s fortunes following last season’s challenges, which included competing without a NASCAR charter.
Versatility Demonstrated Across Diverse NASCAR Tracks
Reddick’s three victories have come on three distinctly different circuits: a superspeedway at Daytona, a high-speed oval at Atlanta, and now a demanding road course at COTA. This impressive range highlights the driver’s adaptability and skill. Currently, Reddick leads the NASCAR standings by 70 points over teammate Bubba Wallace, with Chase Elliott, Ryan Blaney, and Shane van Gisbergen rounding out the top five competitors.
After an unproductive 2025 season, the 30-year-old driver’s performance has completely shifted expectations, signaling a potential new era of competitiveness for both himself and 23XI Racing.
Challenge to NASCAR’s Established Powerhouses
Historically, teams such as Hendrick Motorsports, Team Penske, and Joe Gibbs Racing have dominated NASCAR’s top level. However, with Michael Jordan’s constant presence at the track and Tyler Reddick’s record-setting streak, 23XI Racing is asserting itself as a formidable competitor. Their recent success sends a clear warning to NASCAR’s traditional frontrunners that change is underway in the sport’s competitive landscape.
