On February 15, NASCAR driver Tyler Reddick secured a dramatic win at the 68th Daytona 500, a race marked by a last-lap surge that sealed his victory. This achievement came shortly after a deeply emotional period in his personal life, as his 8-month-old son, Rookie George, began crawling for the first time following a critical surgery to remove a chest tumor. Reddick credits his family’s determination and the support from the NASCAR community for helping him navigate this tumultuous time while competing at the highest level.
The Journey from Diagnosis to Recovery
Rookie’s health struggles began months earlier when a tumor in his chest caused his heart to fail. The mass compressed key blood vessels, including the renal vein and artery, forcing the heart to work harder to circulate blood. Concerned by changes in Rookie’s development, Reddick’s wife, Alexa DeLeon, trusted her instincts when she noticed their son was regressing rather than growing. Pediatricians initially dismissed the symptoms as colic or allergies, but persistent worries led to a further investigation.
It was at Atrium Health Levine Children’s Hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, in late September that doctors identified the tumor and understood the cause of Rookie’s heart failure. The medical team performed surgery to remove one of Rookie’s kidneys that was no longer functioning due to the tumor’s impact, a procedure that was life-saving for the infant.

Family Strength and Community Support
Tyler Reddick has been vocal about the pivotal role his wife played throughout the ordeal.
“I’m really proud of my wife,”
he shared during a February 16 appearance on Good Morning America.
“She had to go to a lot during the entire process but she really was the centerpiece that held everyone together throughout the whole thing. It was tough.”
Alexa’s persistence and advocacy were central to securing the diagnosis and treatment for Rookie.
Beyond family, the NASCAR community provided significant emotional support. Team owners Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin encouraged Reddick to take whatever time he needed away from racing to focus on his family.
“Michael and everybody at 23XI basically told me, ‘Look, if you need to step away and not run another race, do whatever you need to do,’”
Reddick recalled. Fellow driver Joey Logano also helped, ensuring Reddick’s older son, Beau, spent quality time with Logano’s children while the family was in the hospital.
“The amount of support we had from the NASCAR community throughout all of that was just incredible,”
Reddick said, expressing gratitude for the solidarity that helped him persevere.
Rookie’s Progress and Celebration at the Finish Line
Rookie, born on May 25, has made remarkable progress since the surgery and is now described as “happy and healthy.” The stress on his heart has greatly diminished following the tumor removal. Reddick celebrated his Daytona 500 win with his family by his side, including Rookie, Alexa, and older brother Beau.
Speaking to the Associated Press after the race, Reddick reflected on sharing the moment with his youngest son:
“I just remember getting out of the car, and typically I’ve just been able to focus on Beau and my wife, and it’s like Rookie is getting to experience this for the first time, too.”
He praised Rookie’s resilience, calling him
“a trooper, whether it’s been the Thunderbirds blasting over the track, just super loud, stuff I love.”
Reddick also noted Rookie’s energetic nature, adding with a smile,
“He’s been like a speedster. We have to keep up with that. Keep away from the stairs and the bus!”
The Broader Impact and What Lies Ahead
Tyler Reddick’s victory is much more than a win on the racetrack—it symbolizes hope and triumph through adversity. His ability to balance a high-pressure sporting career while supporting his family through a medical crisis highlights resilience and determination. Rookie’s health recovery brings renewed optimism for the Reddick family’s future, and the driver’s steadfast presence in NASCAR underlines the powerful role of community and family support in times of hardship.
Moving forward, Reddick is expected to continue competing at the top level of NASCAR, inspired by his son’s tenacity and the unwavering support system around him. The story serves as a reminder of the personal battles often hidden behind public achievements, and the strength found in unity and courage during the toughest moments.
