Tyler Reddick captured the Daytona 500 on Sunday, driving for 23XI Racing, the NASCAR team co-owned by NBA legend Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin. The victory, achieved just two days before Jordan’s 63rd birthday, marked a major milestone for both Reddick and the celebrated basketball icon, fulfilling a shared dream through the famed No. 45 car formerly worn by Jordan himself.
Reddick Reflects on Achieving a Personal and Team Milestone
Following the race, Reddick described winning the Daytona 500 as “a dream come true” both for himself and for Michael Jordan, who placed great faith in his abilities. During a Tuesday appearance on ESPN’s Get Up, the 30-year-old driver expressed his gratitude for the trust Jordan and Hamlin showed when selecting him as the lead driver for their team. Reddick recalled the pivotal moment, saying,
“To do it for someone like Michael, for myself, is a dream come true. But to do it for someone like Michael, who believes like he does in my driving ability. Three or four years ago, when I was working on where am I gonna go in the future, to have someone like Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin say, ‘You’re the guy we want more than anyone else in the field to drive our No. 45 car.’”
He added,
“I mean, to have someone like a driver, Denny Hamlin, say that and Michael Jordan, who’s accomplished everything that he has in his career and his life … To have those words said about you by those two people is stuff you just never dream could become reality.”
Jordan’s Proud Response to a Hard-Fought Race
Reddick, who joined Jordan’s team last year, recounted the encouraging words the six-time NBA champion offered after the fiercely competitive and chaotic race. For the first time, Reddick led during the Daytona 500, becoming the record-setting 25th driver to hold the lead in the event’s intense competition.
Reddick remembered,
“He was just proud to be staying in the hunt the entire race,”
referring to Jordan’s reaction.
“He used the word clutch. I mean, it really was.”
Jordan’s Emotional Celebration Matches the Significance of the Win
Despite his extensive experience at the top levels of professional sports, Michael Jordan expressed a profound connection to this accomplishment, likening his feelings to winning a championship. After the race, Jordan shared,
“We just hung in there all day. I mean, great strategy by the team, and we gave ourselves a chance at the end. Look, I’m ecstatic. I don’t even know what to say. It feels like I won a championship, but until I get my ring, I won’t even know.”
The Impact of the Win on NASCAR and Jordan’s Legacy
Tyler Reddick’s triumph in the Daytona 500 symbolizes a significant moment for 23XI Racing, reinforcing Michael Jordan’s influence beyond basketball into motorsports. This victory not only adds a prestigious achievement to Reddick’s racing career but also elevates the profile of a team co-led by one of sports’ most iconic figures. As the season progresses, the momentum gained from this win could position 23XI Racing as a dominant force, inspiring both fans and competitors alike in NASCAR’s challenging landscape.
