Vettel and Verstappen Tease Epic Le Mans Superteam Bid

Former Formula 1 world champions Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen have hinted at a possible collaboration to compete together in the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race in the future. The two multiple title winners revealed they have discussed the idea during conversations, indicating a shared interest in tackling this legendary motorsport challenge.

Discussion Between Vettel and Verstappen on Le Mans Partnership

Since retiring from Formula 1 at the end of 2022, Sebastian Vettel has remained relatively low-profile but has occasionally made appearances at major racing events. Speaking to Sky Germany, Vettel revealed that he has maintained regular contact with Max Verstappen, and they have previously talked about the possibility of partnering for Le Mans.

“I am also in regular contact with Max, and we talked a few years ago about how, if the opportunity arises, we would drive Le Mans together.”

Likewise, Verstappen expressed enthusiasm about the prospect when asked directly. He emphasized that any such endeavor would need the right conditions for competitive success. The Dutch driver also mentioned the uncertain timing but hinted that the chance to race together remains open.

“Yeah, yeah. I would love to do that. But, of course, only if we are able to fight for wins. You need to be with the right team.”

“So it’s a bit difficult to say at the moment when this can happen. But I mean, I heard Fernando’s going to be racing until he’s 75 anyway. So I’m sure we’ll find a time and a year to race all together.”

Fernando Alonso, a two-time Formula 1 champion and established Le Mans winner, also expressed interest in joining Vettel and Verstappen if the team is appropriately prepared and competitive, signaling the potential for a formidable superteam.

Verstappen’s Ambition to Compete in the Nürburgring 24 Hours

Max Verstappen’s involvement in endurance racing is expanding beyond speculation. After a victorious debut in a GT3 race last year, he has set his sights on competing in the Nürburgring 24 Hours, pending final confirmation. A key calendar adjustment by the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie (NLS) has increased his chances of participating by providing better preparation opportunities.

“I want to do it. We are working on it to make it happen, but I cannot confirm it yet,”

Verstappen highlighted the importance of adequate preparation for endurance racing, especially at the challenging Nordschleife circuit. Since he has limited experience with some race processes such as pit stops and driver changes, he values the opportunity for at least one preparatory race to learn the necessary skills.

“But it’s great from the organisers that they changed the date [of the preparation race]. Because I think if I do it, I need one race in preparation compared to guys that have been doing it for a while and have a bit more experience. Also, for me, doing it in a new car that I’ve not driven there at the Nordschleife, I think you need a race just to learn the procedures.”

“Even for me doing a pitstop, doing a driver change, I mean, I normally don’t do that. So, all these little things, I just want to prepare well for then potentially participating in the 24 Hours.”

Potential Impact of a Max Verstappen Le Mans Team

The possibility of a team featuring Verstappen and Vettel at Le Mans has generated excitement within the motorsport community, given both drivers’ impressive careers and multiple Formula 1 world titles. Should this partnership materialize, it could mark a significant crossover of F1 talent into endurance racing, potentially attracting fresh attention and competition to Le Mans.

Moreover, the involvement of Fernando Alonso adds further depth to the discussion, hinting at a trio of elite drivers joining forces. While details remain uncertain, the indication that these champions are open to endurance racing suggests future marquee events where the limits of their skills will be tested beyond grand prix circuits.
