The long-running Max Verstappen Mercedes rumours resurfaced in the buildup to the 2025 F1 season, sparking speculation of a major shift in the driver landscape. However, no transfer came to pass, despite intense interest. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff explained that his transparency with George Russell during this period was influenced heavily by advice from Alain Prost. Prost highlighted how McLaren’s management once deliberately set team leaders Ayrton Senna and himself against each other, a pitfall Wolff aimed to avoid.
It was George Russell who reignited the speculation of a Verstappen move to Mercedes ahead of the summer break, suggesting that talks involving Verstappen were affecting his chances of a contract renewal with the team. Verstappen put those rumors to rest before the Hungarian Grand Prix by affirming he would remain with Red Bull through 2026.
Reflecting on his early days at Mercedes when he joined in 2013, Wolff revealed that a brief but impactful conversation with Prost helped form his approach to managing driver relationships, especially when dealing with top talents. Prost, who had famously clashed with Senna during their time as teammates at McLaren, explained the team management’s role in fostering internal conflict.
What I find incredibly important within a team is transparency,
Wolff stated.

“When I started at Mercedes, I spoke to Alain Prost for five minutes on the grid. I asked him what had gone wrong between him and Ayrton Senna at the time. He said, ‘Nothing, but the team management played us off against each other.’ I don’t want to make that mistake.”
Wolff also mentioned the guidance he received from Niki Lauda, who acted as his mentor and friend during his tenure at Mercedes, reinforcing principles of honesty and loyalty within the team.
I have always been honest with George too. It is my job as team principal to explore the market and see how a driver like Max Verstappen, a four-time world champion, views the future.
The Evolution of Wolff and Verstappen’s Relationship Following 2021
The rivalry between Verstappen and Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton in the 2021 season strained the relationship between Wolff and Verstappen’s camp. Their fierce title fight extended beyond the track, intensifying clashes between Wolff and Red Bull’s Christian Horner. Nonetheless, Wolff confirmed that those events no longer impact the possibility of Verstappen joining Mercedes.
While Wolff holds loyalty as a core value, especially regarding Russell, he acknowledged Verstappen’s own reasons for staying with Red Bull. Wolff has known Verstappen and his father Jos for many years, and although tensions peaked in 2021, they have since reconciled.
Wolff commented on the future prospects involving his current drivers and Verstappen:
“George has been driving here for years and is doing a great job, and we also have Kimi [Antonelli], who is a huge talent. We need to give him time to develop further.”
At the same time, Max also has his reasons for staying at Red Bull. He’s not just going to walk away.
Current Status of the 2026 Formula 1 Driver Market
Expectations had been high that Verstappen’s commitment to Red Bull would prompt Mercedes to swiftly finalize Russell’s contract extension. Despite this, Russell has yet to sign a new deal but indicates progress is underway. He described the contract process as deliberate, with both sides aiming for a well-thought-out agreement rather than rushing.
Naturally, we wanted to take the summer off to sort of relax and reset, but [we are] positively moving in the right direction,
Russell told PlanetF1.com’s Thomas Maher.
Russell emphasized the complexity of balancing negotiations alongside racing duties and team matters, stating that no strict deadlines are forcing a quick resolution. He appreciates the team’s willingness to continue discussions during the summer break but chose to use the period for regrouping.
Of course, you are juggling priorities. It’s not like the world stops to sort a contract. We’ve got to worry about race weekends, we’re focusing on future development, already looking ahead to next year, sponsorship days, things sometimes do take longer than you would anticipate. But as I said, they’re positively going in the right direction.
Russell added:
“Toto and the team were very willing to work through the summer break to come to a resolution, but I wanted just to take that time because those two weeks are pretty precious for all of us. I think we’re getting closer to being on the same page with a few things, and hopefully, realistically, we’re talking maybe [a] number of weeks before anything really happens, but there’s no major rush, and I don’t want to really put a timeline on it.”
When it will happen, it will happen. If that’s next week, a month, two months, three months, it will be what it will be.
Looking Ahead to the Impact of 2026 Rules and Driver Movements
The unfolding developments in the driver market set an intriguing backdrop as Formula 1 prepares for substantial regulation changes in 2026. While Verstappen’s Red Bull commitment stabilizes one corner of the grid, uncertainty remains regarding Mercedes’ lineup and emerging talents like Kimi Antonelli.
The balance between loyalty to existing drivers and openness to future possibilities reflects Wolff’s carefully considered approach, shaped by previous lessons and a deep understanding of the sport’s dynamics. How these decisions will influence championship battles and team strategies will be a focal point in the coming seasons.
