Former Formula 1 World Champion and Sky Sports analyst Nico Rosberg commented on the situation Tsunoda faces as Verstappen’s teammate, describing the Dutch driver as exceptionally difficult to match. Rosberg remarked,
“Max Verstappen is a teammate killer. Without exaggerating. That’s just horrible to be a teammate to that guy.”
He noted that no other driver manages to close within six-tenths of Verstappen’s pace, which in Formula 1 terms creates a significant performance gap. Rosberg said,
“The only thing he can do is work as hard as he possibly can to try and learn from what Max Verstappen is doing with that car: Understanding what set-up he’s running, why he’s running it, looking at the data, and just trying to copy step-by-step, corner-by-corner, as much as possible, all the time putting in so much effort.”
He suggested that narrowing the performance gap to within three-tenths of Verstappen’s pace would be an acceptable achievement, explaining,
“If he’s within three-tenths, that’s totally okay.”
Whether this improvement would be enough to secure Tsunoda’s future with Red Bull remains unclear, as the team continues to wrestle with the challenge of balancing support for its standout driver and developing its second driver competitively.
