<pAs the 2026 NASCAR season progresses toward its first road course event at Circuit of the Americas (COTA), AJ Allmendinger, a respected veteran with Kaulig Racing, is determined to challenge Shane van Gisbergen’s dominance on road courses. Van Gisbergen’s entry into NASCAR has redefined competition at these tracks, and Allmendinger, once the benchmark in road racing within the garage, is training intensively to close the gap at the upcoming race following Sunday’s event in Atlanta.
AJ Allmendinger’s preparation strategy ahead of COTA race
AJ Allmendinger has invested significant effort in analyzing every possible element of his car’s performance to improve his chances against Shane van Gisbergen, his former teammate and current road course powerhouse. He expressed his commitment to ongoing study and refinement this week, underscoring his dedication to a strong showing.
I mean, I can’t. I can’t speak on every other driver. I think, for me, I’ve studied everything that I can study in car-wise, and I’ll continually do it going into next week.
AJ Allmendinger said via Frontstretch.
Beyond preparation, Allmendinger supports efforts to unify fanbases by combining NASCAR and IndyCar race weekends, anticipating that cross-series enthusiasm will help grow motorsports’ appeal.
The more times we can get fans together on both sides watching each series… I’m all for.

Understanding Shane van Gisbergen’s superior tire management skills
Allmendinger pinpointed van Gisbergen’s background in the Supercars series as a major factor behind his remarkable endurance and performance during NASCAR races. With three Supercars championships, the New Zealander has perfected the art of conserving tires over long runs while maintaining competitive speed, a skill critical in NASCAR’s tire-sensitive environment.
You know, where he’s really good at is what the Supercar Series, at least from the outside of what I watched, is all about and its tire saving you roll out of your pit stop and you immediately go into tire conservation and that’s where he’s so good at.
AJ Allmendinger added.
This tire management expertise distinguishes van Gisbergen from others in the Cup Series garage. Although several drivers demonstrate strong qualifying speed, few can match his ability to preserve Goodyear tires during a race, particularly as tire compounds have softened, widening the performance gap.
I think the outright speed we’ve shown in qualifying and stuff like that, you can run with them or you can be quicker in them… But he’s so good on still being quick but never overstepping the tire and as Goodyear has softened these tires, it just makes that gap bigger and bigger.
AJ Allmendinger asserted.
Anticipating the demanding Atlanta race weekend
Before the focus shifts to COTA, Allmendinger prepared for the challenging race at Atlanta’s EchoPark Speedway, a venue known for its chaotic and intense competition. Described as a quasi-superspeedway, it demands not only peak physical effort but also sharp mental focus as drivers navigate pack racing conditions and unpredictable events.

It’s kind of a quasi-superspeedway, I mean everybody’s running in a pack, and it’s intense. It definitely feels as fast inside the race car as the racetrack looks from the outside. It’s probably one of the most intense races we have, mentally and even somewhat physically.
AJ Allmendinger said.
The track’s notorious unpredictability has given many drivers, including Allmendinger, a shot at victory if they can avoid early accidents and mount a strong late-race performance. This weekend’s race will test endurance and tactical racing as much as raw speed.
The broader significance of van Gisbergen’s dominance in NASCAR
Shane van Gisbergen’s success showcases how experience from international racing series can translate into new forms of motorsport excellence, particularly in NASCAR’s evolving landscape. His tire conservation skills and measured aggression offer a template for competitors seeking to challenge his dominance. This influence is encouraging drivers, including Allmendinger, to adapt and elevate their performance strategies.
As NASCAR’s competition increasingly features crossover talents like van Gisbergen, the series may experience shifts in race dynamics and fan engagement, highlighted by initiatives such as combined NASCAR and IndyCar race weekends.
Upcoming races at COTA and beyond will reveal whether Allmendinger’s focused preparation and insights into van Gisbergen’s driving style will narrow the gap or if the Kiwi driver will continue to assert control on road courses, cementing his status as one of NASCAR’s most formidable talents.
