Alex Bowman Abruptly Replaced at Hendrick Motorsports Race

Alex Bowman of Hendrick Motorsports, known for his consistent top-ten finishes at Circuit of the Americas, faced difficulties during the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season opener on the Texas road course. Despite his strong history, Bowman struggled throughout the 95-lap DuraMAX Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, which led to an unexpected driver change during the race.

Bowman’s Performance and Early Challenges at COTA

Driving the No. 48 Chevrolet, Bowman entered the race outside the top 30 in the season standings, far from the playoff contenders. While he managed to earn some points by finishing seventh in the first stage, his overall performance lagged throughout the event. The race remained largely caution-free until midway through the third stage, when a loose wheel from Ross Chastain’s No. 1 Chevrolet brought out the first yellow flag.

Myatt Snider Steps In as Relief Driver

Feeling unwell as the race wore on, Bowman made the decision to exit the car to focus on his health. At that moment, Myatt Snider suited up to take over the No. 48 Chevrolet. Snider, who most recently raced part-time in the NASCAR Xfinity Series for DGM Racing with Jesse Iwuji Motorsports in the No. 91 Chevrolet during 2025, was called on to help secure points for the team in the owner standings. Despite Snider’s involvement, Bowman will retain credit for the final race result.

Snider joined the race five laps behind the leader, having spent the event working as a spotter for Fox Sports pit reporter Jamie Little. The 31-year-old Charlotte native, and son of Fox Sports pit reporter Marty Snider, was making his debut in the NASCAR Cup Series. His latest Xfinity start occurred in October at Martinsville Speedway, where he finished 14th. He has not competed on a road course since a 14th-place finish at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval in 2023 while driving for Joe Gibbs Racing.

Relief Driver Situations in NASCAR

Meanwhile, RFK Racing’s Brad Keselowski, recovering from a broken femur sustained in December, remained in his race with relief driver Joey Hand available if needed. Such driver replacements due to health concerns continue to create unique challenges and opportunities in the NASCAR Cup Series.

This situation marks a significant moment for Bowman and Hendrick Motorsports as they adjust through unforeseen circumstances early in the season. Observers will closely watch how the team manages their driver lineup moving forward as the season progresses.
