Jesse Ekene Iwuji, born August 12, 1987, in Carrollton, Texas, is an American professional stock car racing driver and a commissioned officer in the United States Navy Reserve. Known across NASCAR as one of the few African-American drivers competing in the national series, Iwuji balances active military service with a growing presence on the racing circuit. He is recognized for promoting both the armed forces and motorsports communities, serving as a bridge between two demanding worlds.
A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Iwuji combines the discipline of a surface warfare officer with the ambition of a team owner. Early Life and Background
Iwuji grew up in Carrollton, Texas, and attended Hebron High School, where he earned two varsity letters in football and three in track and field. A standout defensive back, he was named first-team all-district in his senior year and was rated as a two-star recruit. His mother, Enderline, had been a track runner in Nigeria, and his sister, Emenderlyn, later ran for Arkansas State, giving the family a deep athletic tradition.
Iwuji is of Igbo descent. His parents, Sebastian and Enderline, immigrated to the United States from Nigeria in the 1980s. He holds dual American and Nigerian citizenship. Path to NASCAR
Iwuji first developed an interest in motorsports while at the Naval Academy, when the football team visited Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte before the 2006 Meineke Car Care Bowl. He began drag racing at Capitol Speedway in Crofton, Maryland, during his senior year, driving a Chrysler 300. After graduating in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree, he upgraded to a Dodge Challenger and ran the Mojave Mile at 200.9 mph, becoming the fifth modern Mopar driver to clear the 200 mph mark at the event.
Following active duty aboard the Mine Countermeasures Crew Exultant and the USS Comstock, Iwuji joined the Naval Postgraduate School staff in southern California, where he drove a Chevrolet Corvette in road racing. In 2014, he tested a stock car for Performance P-1 Motorsports at Irwindale Speedway and began his formal transition to stock car racing the following year. Iwuji’s stock car career began at Irwindale Speedway in 2014 with a test for Performance P-1 Motorsports. Returning from a Persian Gulf deployment in 2015, he made his NASCAR K&N Pro Series West starts at Evergreen Speedway and later at Meridian Speedway, where a crash left him with a 23rd-place finish. During the winter, he ran 34 dirt track races, including a fifth-place run in a Winged 500cc Outlaw Kart A-main, sharpening his skills on varied surfaces.
In 2016, Iwuji committed to a full K&N Pro Series West campaign with Patriot Motorsports Group in the No. 36, posting a best finish of tenth at Orange Show Speedway and earning the Move of the Race Award at Utah Motorsports Campus.
