Alex Bowman will not be behind the wheel of his No. 48 car during NASCAR’s race at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday due to a diagnosis of vertigo. The team has arranged for Anthony Alfredo to take over driving duties as Bowman focuses on his health and recovery.
Reason Behind Alex Bowman’s Absence This Week
Bowman’s recent diagnosis of vertigo has forced him to step away from racing temporarily. This condition has made it unsafe for him to compete, prompting Hendrick Motorsports to prioritize his wellbeing above all else.
Alex has worked very hard over the last several days,
Jeff Andrews, president of Hendrick Motorsports, said in a statement.
We’re encouraged by the progress he’s making, but we have to prioritize his health above all else. It’s obviously frustrating for him because he’s a competitor and wants to be in the race car, especially at his home track. We’ll continue to support Alex and look forward to his return as soon as he’s medically cleared.
Anthony Alfredo Steps in to Drive the No. 48 Car
Rather than the previous stand-in, Myatt Snyder, Anthony Alfredo will be behind the wheel of the No. 48 car at Phoenix Raceway this Sunday. Alfredo, who has a connection with Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet, expressed sympathy for Bowman’s situation and emphasized the importance of his recovery.

First and foremost, I hate it for Alex,
Alfredo said in a release.
No race car driver wants to be in the position where they have to give up their seat for a weekend to someone else. His health is definitely the most important thing, and I hope he gets back to the track soon. I’m fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Blake (Harris, crew chief) and the No. 48 team for this race. It’s a group I’m already familiar with due to my relationship with Hendrick Motorsports and Chevrolet. The goal is to have a solid weekend at Phoenix and help get the team some good notes for future races.
In response to Bowman’s absence, Hendrick Motorsports plans to request a medical waiver to ensure that Bowman remains eligible for the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series championship, according to NASCAR.com.
Context on Substitutions and Upcoming Impact
This decision follows a recent event where Bowman left his car mid-race at Circuit of the Americas to allow Fox’s spotter, Myatt Snyder, to drive. However, Snyder will not be driving at Phoenix. The substitution by Alfredo highlights the team’s adaptability while supporting Bowman’s health needs.
The presence of Alfredo alongside crew chief Blake Harris aims to maintain competitive performance despite these changes. The team’s focus remains on gathering valuable data and maintaining momentum in the season as Bowman recovers.
