Heightened Demand Amidst 2027 Regulation Changes
As all five MotoGP manufacturers prepare to implement new bike regulations and Pirelli tires for 2027, there has been considerable activity in securing top riders. Marquez finds himself in high demand amid this scramble, positioning him not to remain uncertain about his future for long. He expressed confidence about reaching a decision soon.
“Before the first race, I will decide,”
Marquez stated.
“I will have clear what I will do in ’27. But at the moment I’m quite calm, I know more or less which options we have on the table, but still working on that, and then I will decide – if I can decide before the [second pre-season] test in Thailand, I will do it, if not I will wait a little bit. But before the first race I want to have my future closed.”
Gresini Stay Among Options, But Factory Seats Also Considered
Though Marquez did not reveal all possible options available to him, he confirmed that remaining with Gresini is one of the main choices under consideration. He highlighted the familiarity and emotional connection he has with the team, which factors significantly in his deliberation.
“The most solid one is the Gresini one. Because I know the team, I know everything, and the emotional side – that is important for a rider – is there. But, you know… later on, if it’s one year that you can take a risk, it’s next year, because nobody knows which way will be the best one. I will see, and I think for that reason, everything, the market is quite crazy.”
Approaching 30 years old, Marquez is weighing the decision between staying with Gresini or moving to a factory team, a role he has not held since his rookie season in 2020. That year saw an abrupt transition due to COVID-related delays and subsequent demotion to a satellite team.
Factory Interest from KTM and Yamaha Signals Complex Negotiations
Rumors have linked Marquez to potential moves to factory teams such as Yamaha and KTM. Discussions with KTM are reportedly advanced and might coincide with signing Maverick Vinales as his teammate, following KTM’s preparation for the departure of star rider Pedro Acosta at the year’s end. KTM’s motorsport boss, Pit Beirer, has confirmed that the manufacturer’s MotoGP plans remain firmly supported by the board and new owner Bajaj Auto.
On Yamaha’s side, MotoGP director Paolo Pavesio emphasized that the team is awaiting a decision from lead rider Fabio Quartararo, whose future remains uncertain amid reports linking him to a Honda contract. Despite media speculation about Quartararo’s replacement by Jorge Martin, Pavesio insisted no final confirmation has been received.
“In the end, rumours are rumours,”
Pavesio told The Race.
“Our target is to develop the best bike we can, to have good riders willing to race with us. We have a fantastic rider with us, Fabio – if Fabio will decide to go together for the future, we will be very happy, and we’re working for this. In this moment, he told us – and he’s telling us – he has not made up his mind yet.”
“So here we are. But in parallel, of course, our job, my job is to be ready with all the possible scenarios.”
