Alex Rins Exposes Yamaha’s Shocking Engine Failures in MotoGP

Yamaha encountered significant challenges during the MotoGP preseason testing at Sepang, where engine reliability emerged as a critical concern. The trouble began when Fabio Quartararo crashed and fractured a finger, then faced bike problems that cut his day short. Despite these setbacks, Yamaha had already completed essential shakedown tests with a full lineup including satellite and test riders, which provided some groundwork before the full testing weekend.

Engine Problems Halt Track Time and Prompt Technical Review

The situation intensified on Wednesday as Yamaha’s riders, including Alex Rins, were prevented from going on track due to a serious issue with the new V4 engine. Engineers worked urgently to uncover the cause, creating an atmosphere of tension. By Thursday, the team confirmed the fault had been fixed, allowing riders to resume their schedules.

Rins Records Strong Lap but Adopts a Careful Strategy

When Alex Rins returned to action, he delivered a best lap time of 1:57.580, narrowly outperforming Quartararo’s earlier 1:57.869. However, Rins was cautious about pushing the bike too hard given the recent problems.

“Luckily, we had already tested the major components. I wouldn’t say the incidents affected us dramatically,”

Rins said, underscoring the need to focus on fine-tuning rather than aggressive riding at this stage.

Multiple Engine Failures Force Yamaha to Adjust Testing Approach

Rins revealed that not just one but two engines had failed during the sessions—those of Quartararo and Toprak Razgatlioglu—prompting a more conservative approach from Yamaha’s engineers.

“We were told to take it easy and avoid overdoing it,”

he explained. Looking ahead, the team expects to receive new power units before the next tests in Thailand, where they hope to unlock the bikes’ full capabilities.

Rins Maintains Composure Amid Uncertainty

Despite only completing 26 laps so far, Rins displayed the calm and focus of an experienced competitor.

“Today was my fastest lap (1.57.580). The engine was performing like it did on the first day, and we weren’t limited on revs,”

he confirmed confidently. Finishing 12th in the morning session, Rins navigated the disrupted preseason environment with steady resolve.

Yamaha’s Future Hinges on Overcoming Early Setbacks

As Yamaha continues to face a demanding preseason, the team’s ability to solve engine reliability issues will prove crucial. Their performance in the upcoming Thailand tests may determine whether they can recover from this difficult start and deliver on their potential when the MotoGP season begins in earnest.
