Alexander Rossi Challenges Lando Norris: Is ‘Nice Guy’ Attitude Enough to Claim F1 Title?

IndyCar driver Alexander Rossi has expressed doubts about whether Lando Norris can secure the F1 championship against Max Verstappen by adopting a “nice guy” attitude. Citing the intense rivalry between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton during their 2016 title battle as a reference point, Rossi argues that a more aggressive mindset may be necessary to achieve such a goal.

Norris is currently embroiled in a fierce three-way competition for the 2025 championship title, alongside his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, and Verstappen, the reigning champion. Piastri recently surged ahead in the standings after clinching victory at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

During an episode of his Off Track with Hinch and Rossi podcast, co-hosted with James Hinchcliffe, an experienced F1 and IndyCar analyst, Rossi shared his perspective on the situation at McLaren. When Hinchcliffe mentioned Norris’ reputation for being a “nice guy,” Rossi hesitated, expressing concern about the implications of such a mentality in high-stakes racing.

Rossi recalled how Nico Rosberg, a past champion, revealed that competing against Hamilton was the toughest challenge he faced. In a bid to secure an edge over his teammate, Rosberg resorted to drastic measures, including modifying his car seat to gain competitive speed.

While Norris may not yet face that level of internal pressure, Oscar Piastri’s recent performance has positioned him as the lead driver within McLaren, having won three out of five races so far this season.

Rossi’s concerns extend beyond competitive strategy to Norris’ emotional state. Following a significant crash during the qualifying round at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, the McLaren driver famously berated himself on the team radio, labeling himself a “f**king idiot” after crashing his MCL39 in Turn 5, which ultimately left him starting in P10.

Having previously driven for Arrow McLaren in IndyCar, Rossi expressed empathy towards Norris, acknowledging the intense pressure drivers face under such circumstances.

The next chapter in this unfolding drama will occur at the Miami Grand Prix, scheduled from May 2 to 4, where Norris achieved his first career win in 2024. Meanwhile, Rossi will be competing in the Children’s of Alabama IndyCar GP at Barber Motorsports Park during the same weekend.
