The Torrence Racing team announced on Monday that Billy Torrence will return to full-time competition in the NHRA Top Fuel category for the 2026 Mission Foods Drag Racing Series, marking his comeback behind the wheel of the CAPCO Contractors Dragster. This news settles months of speculation, while his son Steve Torrence, a four-time champion, is not expected to compete in the upcoming 20-race 75th anniversary season.
Billy Torrence’s Racing Background and 2026 Season Outlook
With eight career Top Fuel wins and three top-five finishes from 2019 through 2021, Billy Torrence’s last full-time season was in 2024. That year included a strong start with a runner-up finish at the Gatornationals and limited appearances afterward, including a semifinal run at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Brainerd, Minnesota. He is set to resume regular competition beginning March 5-8 at the Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida, where his renewed campaign will unfold.
I’m extremely excited to have the opportunity to race a full season of Top Fuel again this year. The team is eager to get back out and compete and hopefully bring home some Wallys in 2026. There’s no better way to celebrate NHRA’s 75th season than being part of it,
Billy Torrence said.

Experienced Team and Crew Supporting the Return
The team supporting Torrence includes longtime crew chief Richard Hogan and assistant crew chief Bobby Lagana, both critical to the group’s previous success. Justin Crosslin returns as car chief, having helped the organization secure four consecutive NHRA Top Fuel championships from 2018 to 2021. That period included a historic sweep of every race during the Countdown to the Championship, a feat unmatched in NHRA history.
CAPCO Contractors’ Role and Family Ownership
Billy Torrence founded CAPCO Contractors, Inc. in 1995, a pipeline construction company based in Henderson, Texas, near Kilgore. The family-owned enterprise operates globally in oil and gas infrastructure, further emphasizing the close-knit nature of the Torrence racing team. Billy also holds competition licenses in drag racing categories such as Super Comp and Top Dragster, highlighting his deep involvement in the sport.
It’s amazing to see Billy get back behind the wheel. He has already proven himself in this sport, and we’re proud to continue supporting him in his racing career. We’re confident his experience will be an asset both on and off the track,
said Kay Torrence, team owner and Billy’s wife.
Upcoming Preparations and Broader Racing Context
Preparations have commenced with the team scheduled to participate in the PRO test session at Gainesville this week, aiming to fine-tune their performance before the competitive season begins. Meanwhile, veteran drag-racing journalist Susan Wade, known for her deep connection to the sport and nearly 30 seasons of coverage, continues to chronicle stories that highlight the human side of racing, adding depth to NHRA’s narrative.
The Significance of Torrence’s Return and What Lies Ahead
Billy Torrence’s decision to compete full-time once again adds excitement to NHRA’s upcoming 75th anniversary season. His extensive experience and established support crew position him as a formidable contender. This comeback could also influence the dynamics of the top fuel field, especially with Steve Torrence stepping back this year. Fans and competitors alike will watch closely as Torrence aims to add further achievements to his career while celebrating NHRA’s milestone season.
