The International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) has completed the acquisition of Atlanta Dragway in Banks County, near Commerce, Georgia, aiming to restore the historic drag racing venue to its former prominence. This move marks a significant milestone in preserving one of the Southeast’s most iconic drag racing tracks and supporting the motorsports community in the region.
Historic Significance and Community Efforts to Preserve the Track
Opened in 1976, Atlanta Dragway became an essential venue for both grassroots and national drag racing events. This facility was uniquely established on land initially prepared for an airport, with its timing tower originally adapted from the airport’s control tower, symbolizing American motorsport innovation and dedication. After shutting down in 2021, the track’s future became uncertain. However, community members and local leaders joined forces to safeguard the venue, culminating in a unanimous vote by the Banks County Commission that has paved the way for its revival.
Banks County Leaders Express Support for IHRA’s Role
On behalf of Banks County, I want to welcome IHRA and express our appreciation for their investment in Atlanta Dragway,
said Taylor Griffith, Banks County Commissioner.
“This facility has long been an important part of our community’s identity and economy. We are encouraged by IHRA’s commitment to revitalizing the property and preserving its legacy for racers and fans alike.”
“Banks County understands the positive impact that motorsports can have on local businesses, tourism, and community pride. We look forward to working alongside IHRA to ensure Atlanta Dragway continues to be a destination that benefits our citizens while honoring the rich racing history that so many families here cherish.”
We are optimistic about this next chapter and the opportunities it brings for growth, partnership, and continued economic development in Banks County.
IHRA’s Vision for Atlanta Dragway’s Future
For the IHRA, acquiring Atlanta Dragway goes beyond reopening a racetrack—it is about rekindling a cherished gathering place for racers and families. Darryl Cuttell, IHRA Owner, highlighted the importance of this step in reaffirming the facility’s place in drag racing history.
Atlanta Dragway has a long history in the sport, and we’re proud to bring it into the IHRA family,
said Cuttell.
Our goal is to invest in historic tracks, support racers at every level, and build strong relationships with the communities around our facilities. Hosting the Outlaw Nitro Series World Finals is just the beginning of what we plan to build here.
Upcoming Events and Regional Importance
The track is set to host the IHRA Outlaw Nitro Series World Finals from October 22 to 24, 2026, reestablishing Atlanta Dragway as a premier national racing venue. In addition, it will serve as a major Southeastern venue for sportsman racing, national competitions, and initiatives aimed at engaging local communities, reinforcing its role as a central hub for motorsports enthusiasts in the region.
