Bubba Wallace, driving for 23XI Racing, has started the 2026 NASCAR Cup Series season strong, delivering competitive performances in the first two races. At Sunday’s Autotrader 400 in Atlanta, Wallace was awarded additional points following a contentious moment late in stage two, bolstering his standing early in the season.
Wallace led several laps in the first two stages and appeared to face a setback when William Byron overtook him near the end of stage two. However, a caution flag flew moments later after Kyle Larson was spun out by Shane van Gisbergen, causing disruption on the track. Officials determined that Wallace was slightly ahead of Byron when the caution came out, awarding him the stage victory and the associated points.
Race Developments and Team Reactions
This determination meant Wallace earned all 10 points for winning stage two, along with a playoff point, adding to his eighth-place finish in the overall race. The third stage saw Wallace slip in position, but teammate Tyler Reddick secured the race win, marking back-to-back victories for the 23XI Racing team.
After the race, Wallace expressed excitement about his teammate’s success despite his own mixed feelings.
“Yeah, I’m just pumped that Toyota got in Victory Lane,”
Wallace said.
“I have to go back and see. I didn’t think I moved up that much to allow — to put myself up top, top of three. Unfortunate, but man, what a race car we had today.”
Michael Jordan, co-owner of 23XI Racing and NBA Hall of Famer, praised Reddick’s driving while sympathizing with Wallace.

“Tyler did an unbelievable job. Both teams did an unbelievable job,”
Jordan remarked.
“I wanted him to win. I feel bad for Bubba, obviously, because he had an unbelievable day, but Tyler drove his ass off, and I’m very happy for Tyler. I’m very happy for 23XI.”
Jordan highlighted the resilience of the team amid challenges, referencing a prior legal dispute:
“The guys worked hard all summer. I know we had our little ordeal, but they never gave up. They kept working hard, and this is the fruit of their labor. You know, they put forth the effort, and for us to come out and win the first two races says a lot about our whole team.”
Kyle Larson Takes Responsibility for On-Track Collision
Kyle Larson, whose incident with Shane van Gisbergen triggered the caution that benefited Wallace, accepted fault for the collision when speaking to FOX Sports.
“Forty-five out of my corner mirror,”
Larson explained.
“Yeah, ran right into him….[I] need to listen more, I guess, and not just react to how I feel. [I] made a big error there.”
Implications for Bubba Wallace and 23XI Racing Moving Forward
Wallace’s additional points strengthen his position in the early NASCAR Cup Series standings, reflecting his consistent performance and competitiveness despite setbacks. With teammates like Tyler Reddick winning races and Michael Jordan providing strong leadership off the track, 23XI Racing has demonstrated resilience and depth early this season.
As the season unfolds, Wallace’s ability to capitalize on opportunities like the stage two win could prove crucial in the playoff race. Meanwhile, the team’s focus on overcoming past challenges signals a determined effort to continue their strong momentum and contend for championships.
