Carlos Sainz has openly acknowledged that Williams continues to face significant difficulties in key areas essential for fielding a competitive Formula 1 car as the new season approaches. Speaking ahead of the Australian Grand Prix, the Spanish driver reflected on a challenging winter for the historic Grove-based team yet expressed cautious optimism about improving their standing before the year’s end.
Williams’ Recent Performance and Regulatory Setbacks
Last year, Williams defied expectations by finishing fifth in the constructors’ championship with 137 points. Sainz, who secured two podium finishes and a sprint top-three, experienced a season marked by a slow start but strong finish. Nonetheless, recent regulation changes appear to have undermined much of that momentum, with the team falling back from the progress they had made.
In an interview with Mundo Deportivo, Sainz painted a clear picture of the current situation:
We do the same calculations but with a little more information, and we have an approximation of where we stand. But the reality is that until we unload the cars with full tanks of gas in Australia and everyone pushes the engine to its limits, we won’t really know where we are.
He bluntly added,
“Realistically speaking, we’re not where we were last year.”
Testing Challenges and Weight Concerns at Bahrain
Williams missed the private Barcelona shakedown before the season launch, marking a difficult start to preparations. Despite this setback, the team completed 748 laps during official pre-season testing at the Bahrain International Circuit across six days. Still, their FW48 car is rumored to exceed the 768kg minimum weight limit, a worrying indication for a team eager to regain competitiveness.

Sainz Maintains Hope Amidst Ongoing Difficulties
Despite the obstacles faced, Sainz conveyed determination to drive improvement.
The car is very new; it’s still green, and we’re going to improve it in every way,
he said, emphasizing ongoing development.
It’s been a very tough winter for the team, but that doesn’t mean that how the first race goes will set the tone for the whole season.
He underscored the importance of this season for both car and engine growth as Williams strives to return to form.
Expressing ambition for better results, Sainz declared,
We’d like to be at least where we were at the end of last year, or even better,
while acknowledging that correcting several critical issues remains essential for a full comeback.
Addressing the Impact of Regulation Changes on Williams
Sainz offered insight into the broader challenges posed by the latest regulatory changes.
I think everyone in the F1 world expected that a change in regulations could help teams that aren’t yet at the level of the top teams to get closer. And perhaps, as has always happened historically in Formula 1, the teams that are already well-oiled and well-prepared take advantage of the regulation change to take a big step forward.
The four-time Grand Prix winner also noted how less developed teams often fall victim to errors that hinder progress.
This year, we’ve realized that we’re still failing in two or three things that are key when it comes to producing a top Formula 1 car, and we’ve learned from that this winter and we’ll apply it going forward.
Looking Ahead to the Australian Season Opener
As the start of the Australian Grand Prix draws near, all attention turns to Williams and their ability to rebound. After a season of highs and lows for Carlos Sainz and the team, the pressure to overcome lingering problems and regain competitiveness has intensified. Their progress in the coming weeks will be a crucial indicator of whether Williams can reestablish themselves among the top contenders in the Formula 1 grid.
