Carson Hocevar Shines with Top-Five Finish at Atlanta Chaos

Carson Hocevar showcased determination and skill during the Autotrader 400 at EchoPark Speedway in Atlanta, delivering a top-five finish despite early adversity. The 2024 full-time NASCAR Cup Series driver overcame a flat right-front tire and multiple laps lost in the opening stage to climb back into contention, demonstrating why he is a rising force in the series.

Hocevar’s efforts fueled Spire Motorsports as he maneuvered through traffic and strategic restarts, eventually starting second on the outside line for the critical penultimate restart. His No. 77 Chevrolet aggressively moved between Bubba Wallace and Christopher Bell at the start of the first overtime, resulting in contact that spun Bell’s No. 20 Toyota into the outside wall.

Incidents and Reactions During Overtime Battles

Following the lap 237 incident with Bell and Joey Logano, which sent Logano’s No. 22 car off the track and through the frontstretch grass, Hocevar acknowledged the intense competition. He admitted the aggressive racing was part of battling for position.

I’m sure I owe people apologies, but I think we’re all battling for spaces and runs,

Hocevar told Fox after the race, referring directly to the collisions.

Bell, meanwhile, reserved judgment until reviewing footage of the contact. His No. 20 car suffered significant damage that dropped him to 21st place in the final standings, leaving him with only 25 points after two races and ranked 31st in the regular-season standings.

I’m going to keep my mouth shut until I see a replay,

Bell said.

You never expect anything, especially from him. … Maybe there was a hole there and that’s what he thought he was going to fill.

Strategic Moves and Final Laps Drama

In double overtime, Hocevar restarted on the front row and, with assistance from teammate Ross Chastain, surged to the lead with just over a lap remaining. He skillfully split between 23XI Racing drivers Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick to secure the top spot.

However, on the final lap, Reddick edged ahead of Hocevar after benefiting from teammate Chase Briscoe’s push. Without similar help, Hocevar made contact with Wallace, which caused him to fall back to fifth place. Still, Hocevar recovered by passing Shane van Gisbergen to finish fourth, closely followed by teammate Daniel Suarez.

Spire Motorsports’ Historic Top-Five Performance on Oval

Spire Motorsports celebrated its first occasion placing two cars inside the top five on an oval, a milestone previously achieved only once at Watkins Glen International in 2024 when Hocevar and Zane Smith finished in the top five. The performance marks a significant achievement for the team at a prominent event.

I was really happy with this Spectrum Chevrolet,

said Hocevar. He emphasized the team’s strong recovery from being two laps down to scoring stage points and completing the race in fourth — a vital contribution to their overall points standings.

Luckily, all four tires were straight. My toe was knocked out, but it was still pretty fast and we finished fourth.

Daniel Suarez’s Steady Drive Leads to Another Top Finish

Daniel Suarez, also racing for Spire Motorsports, advanced steadily throughout the race despite lower positions during the opening two stages, finishing 23rd and 25th respectively. He capitalized on the critical moments late in the event to reach the top five, earning his fifth such finish in nine starts at the reconfigured superspeedway, the best record in the series.

I’m very proud of everyone at Spire Motorsports,

Suarez expressed.

I couldn’t be prouder, honestly. This team just continues to fight; continues to show up and continues to get better. They never doubt that we can make the car better. We just need to keep cleaning a few things up to keep getting better, but very excited for the start of the season.

Points Standings and Upcoming Challenges for Spire Motorsports

Following two races, Hocevar holds fourth place in the regular-season points, maintaining a 30-point lead above the cutoff line. Suarez ranks seventh, positioned comfortably 23 points above the cutline. Their consistency provides positive momentum for Spire Motorsports as the season continues.

The team will next rely on Michael McDowell, known for his road course expertise, at the Circuit of The Americas. After two events, McDowell occupies 20th place in the championship standings, aiming to contribute crucial points to the team effort.

Looking ahead, Hocevar expressed cautious optimism about his prospects on the upcoming road course and beyond.

Pretty excited about a strong start to the year. Now, I’m going to mess up a little bit on the road course, not being a total up-front contender, and then hopefully get back up front type of deal at Phoenix.
