Chase Elliott: NASCAR’s Racing Mentality Stays Unchanged

NASCAR is reverting to its classic Chase playoff format starting in the 2026 season, introducing a 10-race showdown among the top 16 drivers from the regular season to determine the champion. This change aims to restore legitimacy and authenticity to the title race, bringing enthusiasm from both the NASCAR community and fans.

Chase Elliott, the 2020 Cup Series champion, recently discussed the impact of this format adjustment during an interview with Peter Stratta. Elliott emphasized that despite the changes, the core racing mentality of drivers will remain the same, with strategies continuing to revolve around maximizing points throughout each race.

Chase Elliott on Consistent Racing Strategies Amid Changes

Reflecting on how the playoff alteration will influence drivers’ approach, Elliott noted that their mindset will mirror previous years, focusing on tactical decisions concerning stage points based on their standing in the points table.

“I think no different than it was before (racing mentality). We made decisions and strategy as it pertains to stage points and things of that nature based on what we had going on in the points.”

He further clarified that unlike in past playoff rounds—particularly the Round of 12 and Round of 8—where wins had more weight late in the playoffs, the new system spreads opportunities more evenly across the longer playoff duration. Elliott believes this will allow enough time for the competition to naturally shape itself and expects familiar contenders to remain at the front.

“Certainly, as you got to the Round of 12 and the Round of eight, I don’t really see that being a whole lot. You’re just going to be making those decisions, not necessarily in the last two or three weeks. That’s when we’re going to start coming along… I think that’s the whole point of this deal is there’s enough time for it to sort itself out. And it’s going to be uh it’s going to be the same crowd it’s always been.”

Chase Briscoe Weighs In on the Hybrid Playoff Format

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Chase Briscoe expressed enthusiasm for the revamped playoff format, agreeing with Elliott on the positive aspects of blending a full-season points system with an extended playoff schedule. Briscoe highlighted that the format rewards consistency while still allowing drivers who peak at the right moment to seize the championship.

“I’m excited… I think all the drivers for sure wanted it to be a real example of the body of work that you’ve done all season long. And I think that this format kind of hits all those things, and it’s kind of a perfect mixture of you get that 10 race playoffs where a guy can kind of get hot at the right time.”

Briscoe also noted that the new system preserves the excitement of the playoffs while maintaining the significance of season-long performance, especially regarding how seeding will be determined when the Chase begins. His perspective aligns with NASCAR veteran Mark Martin’s views on this being a sound resolution from the playoffs committee discussions.

“You still have the playoff feel, and then you still have kind of the season-long points because it is going to matter all season long where you’re running because of how the seedings work when the chase starts.”

Anticipating the Impact on NASCAR’s Competitive Landscape

The insights from Chase Elliott and Chase Briscoe suggest the new Chase NASCAR format will enhance the sport by valuing consistent performance while preserving high-stakes competition. By combining the thrill of a 10-race playoff with a season-long points framework, NASCAR is positioned to engage drivers and fans alike with a more balanced championship battle.

As the 2026 season approaches, attention will focus on whether the same group of contenders continues to dominate or if emerging drivers capitalize on the new opportunity to challenge for the championship. This format change represents a significant shift intended to reinforce competitive integrity and excitement in the NASCAR Cup Series for years to come.
