Chase Elliott’s Team Faces Icy NASCAR Challenge Ahead

Chase Elliott’s team is preparing for difficult weather as NASCAR returns this weekend for the 2026 season opener at Bowman Gray Stadium in North Carolina. Known as the Cook Out Clash, this event follows Elliott’s 8th place finish in the previous NASCAR Cup Series, with the driver aiming for a stronger start despite forecasted icy conditions.

Cold Weather and Ice Add Complexity to Race Preparations

Alan Gustafson, Elliott’s crew chief, has highlighted the challenges posed by freezing temperatures likely to affect the southern race venue. The region has faced sleet, rain, wind, and snow over recent days, making track conditions uncertain ahead of the event scheduled for February 1.

Addressing the situation, Gustafson told PRN:

“Lower temperatures are okay… ice is a bit of a game-changer. It was really cold last year.”

He added,

“The racing is good that way, there was good grip on the tracks. It’s another opportunity to have a great event… as long as it stays dry.”

Efforts to Maintain Track Usability Amid Inclement Weather

NASCAR executives have shared updates showing staff working diligently to remove ice from the track surface. One executive noted,

“The team prepped the facility late last week. We’re continuing to monitor the situation. Stay safe everyone.”

Temperatures are expected to drop as low as 34 degrees, setting the stage for what could be a demanding race weekend for drivers and their crews.

Looking Ahead to a Critical NASCAR Season

This season begins with the Cook Out Clash, before moving on to the Daytona 500 two weeks later. William Byron will attempt to make history at Daytona by becoming the first driver to win three consecutive races at the historic event. For Elliott and his team, overcoming the weather challenges at Bowman Gray Stadium will be essential to gaining momentum as the season unfolds.
