While the NTT INDYCAR SERIES recently tested on a road course and will open the 2026 season on a street circuit, attention is already shifting to the six oval races scheduled for the year. Christian Rasmussen, the 2023 INDY NXT by Firestone champion, has made a surprising mark as a strong contender on oval tracks, signaling potential success in the upcoming season.
Reviewing Last Year’s Top Performers on Oval Circuits
In 2025, Alex Palou proved dominant on ovals, clinching the Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge and securing a victory at Iowa Speedway, which helped him lead oval points with a total of 252. Pato O’Ward closely followed with 208 points, capturing the other Iowa race. However, the third-highest points earner on ovals was not one of the typical oval specialists.
Christian Rasmussen’s Unexpected Oval Performance
Surprisingly, Christian Rasmussen ranked third in oval points last year, accumulating 173 points across six oval events. Despite a setback at the Nashville Superspeedway finale—where an early crash limited him to just five points—Rasmussen consistently finished within the top eight during the other oval races. His notable achievement includes winning at the Milwaukee Mile, marking his first series victory.
Rasmussen’s oval performances were impressive, especially considering his qualifying struggles. Starting positions were often far behind leaders, yet he climbed steadily during races, such as moving from 18th to sixth at Indianapolis, advancing from 25th to third at World Wide Technology Raceway, and improving from 19th to sixth and 17th to eighth during the two Iowa Speedway races. At Milwaukee, he was ninth on the starting grid before winning the race.

ECR Team’s Progress and Future Prospects
Rasmussen drives the No. 21 Splenda Chevrolet for ECR, a team benefiting from significant enhancements since Ted Gelov joined as a partner, bringing resources from Heartland Food Group, Java House, and Splenda. Rasmussen, who finished 13th overall in the 2025 standings, believes the team is on the cusp of greater achievements across all types of circuits.
I think everyone got a taste of it last year where the team is going, and I think there’s more of that coming here in the near future,
Rasmussen said.
The organization fields cars for Alexander Rossi full-time and offers an Indy-only ride for co-owner Ed Carpenter, consistently improving its operation. Rasmussen acknowledged the steady progress, noting the advantage of this development as the season gets underway.
honing, getting better all the time,
he commented.
Upcoming Oval Challenges and Rasmussen’s Optimism
The series will hold an Open Test at Phoenix Raceway on February 17-18, followed by a return for the Good Ranchers 250 on March 6-7, the opening oval race for 2026. Rasmussen, who has proven his fondness and skill on oval tracks, expressed enthusiasm for the challenges ahead.
For whatever reason (ovals) just kind of click with me,
he said. I love oval racing.
Implications for the 2026 INDYCAR Season
Christian Rasmussen’s strong performances on oval tracks, despite previous qualifying difficulties, and the ongoing enhancements within ECR, position him as a leading contender for multiple oval victories in 2026. His rapid progress and team’s momentum could reshape the dynamics of the oval circuit races, challenging established masters like Scott Dixon, Will Power, and Josef Newgarden. As the season begins, all eyes will be on Rasmussen to see if he can turn promise into consistent dominance in oval racing.
