Christopher Bell expressed frustration after finishing second at the Straight Talk Wireless 500 held Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, where a problematic tire strategy cost him victory. Ryan Blaney edged out Bell to take the win in a race plagued by multiple tire blowouts, with Blaney dominating the event and securing just the second win in this NASCAR Cup Series season.
Blaney Ends Reddick’s Early Season Winning Streak
Blaney’s triumph concluded Tyler Reddick’s unprecedented start to the season, which featured three consecutive wins including the Daytona 500, Atlanta, and Circuit of the Americas. The victory marked a significant moment for Ryan Blaney and his team, who tactically chose to take two tires during the final pit stop, a decision that proved crucial in overcoming Bell’s lead.
Final Pit Strategy Alters Race Outcome
Bell’s team elected for a four-tire change on the last pit stop, while Blaney’s crew opted for only two tires, allowing Blaney to exit pit road ahead and seize the lead from Ty Gibbs after the restart. Bell restarted the race in seventh place and had to work his way back, climbing to second with seven laps remaining. Despite closing the gap, he finished just half a second behind Blaney.
Bell’s Performance and Team Effort
The defending winner at Phoenix led eight times throughout the race, accumulating 176 of the 312 laps in front of the field. He held a commanding three-second advantage prior to a caution with 25 laps left, which altered the race’s dynamics and led to a critical strategic call.

Bell praised his team’s efforts in the aftermath, noting the contributions of his pit crew, engineers, and crew chief Adam Stevens, despite the strategic setback. Stevens himself took responsibility for the pit decision, acknowledging after the race, “That was on me.”
Yeah, ultimately, if we had more green flag laps, I think we could have made a run at him,
Bell said.
You win some, you lose some, and this one stings, but on a positive side, I’m really proud of our entire team. The pit crew did amazing. Adam brought an amazing car. Our engineers and our mechanics did really well, and it’s something to build on.
Impact on Standings and Future Races
Following this race, Bell holds sixth place in the points standings, marking his second consecutive top-10 finish. Ryan Blaney’s win elevated him to second place overall, pushing Bubba Wallace down to third. Tyler Reddick still leads the championship after his strong start to the season.
The NASCAR Cup Series now shifts focus to the forthcoming Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway scheduled for Sunday, March 15, as drivers seek to leverage every opportunity in the competitive 2026 campaign.
I don’t know – it was a day that we needed. We got a lot of stage points (and) finished second. Just bummed whenever they get away like that.
