Ty Gibbs Opens Up on NASCAR Crew After Phoenix Finish

Ty Gibbs, a driver for Joe Gibbs Racing, expressed confidence in his team after securing a fourth-place finish at the Straight Talk Wireless 400 in Phoenix. The 23-year-old, who moved to the Cup Series full-time in 2023, is still searching for his first victory at this top-level stage but believes being “with the right guys” offers a strong foundation for future success.

Although Gibbs has yet to win a Cup Series race, the 2023 season has shown improvement, including three top-three finishes and winning the inaugural in-season challenge. After a difficult start in Daytona and Atlanta, he rebounded with consecutive fourth-place results at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) and Phoenix, boosting his position in the standings.

Steady Progress in Points and Performance

Gibbs earned 48 points at COTA and 36 at Phoenix, an improvement compared to the 15 points collected over the first two races. His strong comeback preceded the dramatic scene where Phoenix winner Ryan Blaney chased his car as it rolled away during a post-race interview. Gibbs’ gains in points and finishes are crucial, especially with NASCAR’s playoff system reverting to a format resembling the older “chase” championship.

The driver emphasized the importance of accumulating stage points in maintaining playoff viability this year, highlighting his growing synergy with his crew.

Gibbs Praises Team Effort and Shared Belief

Speaking with FOX Sports, Gibbs commented on the critical role of his team in recent races.

“Very happy with my team and all the guys. I’m with the right guys, and that makes a difference,”

he said.

Further expressing pride in collective effort, he added,

“We’re running good because of that and it shows. Really happy with my team. Everybody’s done a great job. Everybody believes in me and we all believe in each other, so happy with that.”

This mutual trust appears to be driving both Gibbs and his crew toward consistent performances.

Race Reflections and Areas for Improvement

Gibbs acknowledged that while victory eluded him, the experience remains a positive motivator for the remaining season.

“It kinda sucks I didn’t win, but I thought we had a lot of fun racing out there. It probably looked cool,”

he reflected.

“We’ll keep rolling. Thank you to the man above and all my guys that believe in me and are really loyal, so I really appreciate that.”

Despite showcasing speed and competitiveness with his No. 54 car, Gibbs admitted he could have handled some situations better.

“We were really good today and, I don’t know, that’s unfortunate. We’ll keep rolling and I think I could’ve done some things better there. Unfortunate there,”

he noted, signaling a focus on continuous improvement.

Current Competitive Landscape and Upcoming Events

Recent Cup Series results underscore the competitive environment Gibbs faces, with Tyler Reddick dominating several races for 23XI Racing and Ryan Blaney winning at the Phoenix event for Team Penske. These performances highlight the talent Gibbs must contend with as he aims for his breakthrough.

The next five Cup Series races are scheduled as follows: Pennzoil 400 in Las Vegas on March 15, Goodyear 400 at Darlington on March 22, Cook Out 400 in Martinsville on March 29, Food City 500 at Bristol on April 12, and AdventHealth 400 in Kansas on April 19. These events represent crucial opportunities for Gibbs to build momentum.

Implications for Ty Gibbs and Joe Gibbs Racing Moving Forward

As NASCAR’s playoff system returns to a modified chase format, Gibbs’ ability to secure points and strong finishes will be pivotal to his postseason hopes. His positive relationship with the team and acknowledgment of their joint efforts suggest a united front moving forward.

Gibbs’ steady performances at tracks including COTA, Phoenix, Atlanta, and Daytona hint at growing confidence, but also acknowledge the need for refinement to convert competitive runs into wins. Keeping this trajectory alive depends on maintaining the trust within Joe Gibbs Racing and capitalizing on upcoming races to enhance his standing.
