NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. has urged rising star Carson Hocevar to accept the critical spotlight that naturally accompanies competing at NASCAR’s highest level. Through his Dale Jr Download podcast, Earnhardt Jr. shared how he encourages Hocevar to view the scrutiny not as a setback but as a sign of relevance in the fiercely competitive NASCAR Cup Series.
Earnhardt explained he frequently messages Hocevar, emphasizing that criticism is inevitable for drivers who make an impact.
“I have to text Carson all the time,”
he said.
“I text Hocevar and I say, ‘Hey, you know, we’re critical. We’re going to be critical. We’re going to talk about you. Your job is to buckle up and race and do your best. The noise is going to be noisy. When they’re not talking about you is when you need to be worried.’”
The Importance of Attention and Visibility in NASCAR
Earnhardt stressed that receiving attention, even if it involves negative feedback, is preferable to being overlooked in the sport.
“If you’re invisible out there, if nobody’s worried about you, concerned about you, pulling for you, caring about your performance – then you’re in trouble,”
he added. He believes that being talked about signals that a driver is actively shaping the competition and narratives on the track.
According to Earnhardt, visibility is a crucial marker of a driver’s influence and career trajectory. This applies in cases of both praise and criticism, as high-profile attention means a driver is making waves — a necessary element for success in NASCAR’s demanding environment.
Earnhardt Sees Hocevar’s Aggressive Tactics as a Double-Edged Sword
Carson Hocevar has built a reputation as a bold and aggressive competitor, frequently at the heart of heated discussions among analysts, fans, and peers. Earnhardt recognizes that while such intensity can bring pressure, it also proves Hocevar’s significance in the sport.
“There are drivers out there that fit that bill. I never wanted to be one of those guys,”
Earnhardt said, referring to racers who rarely draw attention or affect the race outcome. However, he acknowledges that drivers like Hocevar, who consistently appear in headlines, greatly influence NASCAR’s storylines and competition.
Earnhardt encourages Hocevar to persist in this manner, suggesting that as long as he continues to generate conversation and controversy, his career remains on an impactful path. Ignoring distractions and focusing on racing hard remains the best approach for Hocevar as he navigates the challenges of the Cup Series.
