David Coulthard has downplayed Max Verstappen’s recent complaints regarding the latest Formula 1 regulations, asserting that all drivers primarily focus on speed and winning. Verstappen, the four-time F1 champion, described the current rules as “anti-racing” and compared the experience to “Formula E on steroids,” expressing frustration over limited driving freedom under the new framework.
The initial phase of the 2024 F1 season saw teams undergo testing at the Bahrain International Circuit, with all 11 squads participating in track sessions after a private shakedown in Spain. Red Bull, Verstappen’s team, completed an impressive 343 laps over three days in Bahrain, indicating strong preparation for the upcoming races despite Verstappen’s reservations about the RB22 car.
Understanding Verstappen’s Discontent With the Latest Power Unit Rules
Max Verstappen’s comments highlight his dissatisfaction with the 2026-spec power units, which now balance electrical and combustion propulsion equally. This change has shifted race strategies towards careful battery management, forcing drivers to recharge energy during slower parts of the track by modifying throttle and braking techniques.
This energy conservation approach conflicts with traditional aggressive driving styles, prompting Verstappen to say,
“The feeling is not very F1-like. It feels a bit more like Formula E on steroids. As a pure driver, I enjoy driving flat out, and, at the moment, you cannot drive like that.”

“At the end of the day, when it comes to racing, when the lights go out, you just want to be fast and you want to be first.”
He further said,
“He’s [Max] in, believe it or not, his 12th season of Formula 1. So, he’s been around for a few years. He’s built the respect of his competitors. He’s got the right to have an opinion in terms of the driving experience. But he’ll not be thinking about that when he gets to Melbourne.”
Coulthard also remarked,
“That’s the wonderful thing about racing. Once all the talking stops, it’s about the stopwatch and it’s about the chequered flag.”
This reflects the intense competitive spirit ingrained in drivers at the highest level of motorsport.
Mercedes Emerges as a Strong Rival to Verstappen and Red Bull

“I spoke to Max a couple of days ago and when I asked him ‘Who are your competitors?’ he went anyone with a Mercedes engine,”
Coulthard recalled. The competitiveness is further exemplified by George Russell of Williams, who is regarded as a potential world champion contender despite Williams’ struggles on the grid.
Coulthard noted,
“Williams look a little bit on the back foot. So right now if you had to place a bet, then probably George Russell for world champion is not a bad bet.”
However, he cautioned against underestimating Verstappen’s skill and determination, asserting, “But never write off Max.”
