Denny Hamlin experienced one of the most painful moments of his racing career during the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series finale at Phoenix Raceway. Despite leading a record-setting 208 laps and being just two laps from a commanding victory, an untimely caution caused by William Byron’s blown tires changed everything. The critical error came when Joe Gibbs Racing’s pit crew opted for a four-tire change instead of two, while Kyle Larson’s team executed a quicker stop, handing the Hendrick Motorsports driver the advantage and ultimately the championship. As the next race approaches, Hamlin carries the weight of that crushing loss with him.
Reflecting on his feelings ahead of the return to Phoenix, Hamlin acknowledged the difficulty of that weekend but emphasized how the disappointment fuels his determination. He hopes the racing conditions have remained consistent since his last appearance and enters the upcoming event with strong expectations.
Yeah, I mean, it certainly was a tough weekend we had there. But, you know, for us, it’s about can we go out there and have another strong performance, you know, and hopefully didn’t lose anything in the offseason. So, I think we should go there and have high expectations.
Denny Hamlin told Jeff Gluck of The Athletic.
Challenges Beyond the Track Deepen Hamlin’s Trials
The heartbreak at Phoenix marked the beginning of a turbulent period for Hamlin. Over the offseason, he faced an acrimonious charter lawsuit that strained his focus. Tragically, he also lost his father in a house fire, compounding his emotional burdens. Adding to his struggles, Hamlin reinjured his shoulders, hampering his physical readiness and making the offseason one of the most difficult in his distinguished career.

Strong Performance at COTA Revives Confidence
Despite the hardships, the 2026 season has started on a promising note for Hamlin. His No. 11 team demonstrated solid form, including an impressive top-10 finish at Circuit of The Americas (COTA), a track historically challenging for him. The success of 23XI Racing’s Tyler Reddick, who secured three consecutive wins, has injected further optimism as Hamlin steadily works his way back toward championship contention.
It’s not a win, but it’s a top five on another racetrack. A top three. You know what I mean? Like, a win is big. You don’t get them that often. I don’t get top 10s on road courses often. But still a win on the weekend.

Hamlin credited COTA as one of his best-executed road course races in recent memory, highlighting his ability to maintain consistency by avoiding costly errors.
It was a good weekend. Truthfully, I felt like it was one of the better executed races that I’d had on a road course. Again, really concentrating on not having these one-off laps that are three or four seconds behind because I blew a corner.
Denny Hamlin added.
The Road Ahead: Reclaiming Victory and the Championship Chase
This renewed momentum plays a crucial role as Hamlin remains 126 points behind leader Tyler Reddick in the standings. To stay in the hunt, he must return to victory lane quickly and maintain strong finishes. His recent performances suggest he has the resilience and skill to overcome last season’s setbacks. Hamlin’s dedication to overcoming adversity and extracting lessons from the painful 2025 championship loss will shape his pursuit of redemption in the races to come.
