Denny Hamlin Faces Season with Torn Shoulder, No Surgery Planned

On February 4, NASCAR driver and team owner Denny Hamlin disclosed during a media session at Bowman Gray Stadium that he has re-injured his shoulder during the off-season. With the NASCAR Cup Series set to begin shortly, Hamlin confirmed that surgery to repair the injury is not an option at this time due to the proximity to the season opener.

The non-points event known as The Clash, scheduled for the same day at Bowman Gray Stadium, will kick off the NASCAR season. Following that, the series will move to Daytona International Speedway for Speedweek starting February 11.

Hamlin Opts Against Surgery, Focuses on Managing Injury Throughout Season

Hamlin had previously undergone surgery for the same shoulder injury in 2023, but his condition worsened after re-injury during the off-season. Rather than undergo another surgery now, the driver plans to carefully manage the injury for the entire 2024 season to maintain his performance on the track.

“Looking into a crystal ball and as the year goes on, it certainly depends on making sure I’m doing the right things outside of the car,”

Hamlin said thoughtfully.

“Working to keep the range good, keeping the strength good to get to the that November date where I can work on getting it fixed again.”

He added that he will have to forego many activities he enjoys to avoid aggravating the injury.

“Limiting a lot of the things I love to do is also a priority. It’s just going to be priority this season, unfortunately. I’m just going to miss a lot of fun things I like to do.

A lot those things aggravate it and cause the tear to get worse. It’s torn, but it’s just kind of hanging on by a few parts and pieces that I need to keep intact for the full year.”

Personal Challenges Shape Hamlin’s Outlook and Focus

Last November, Hamlin came close to capturing his first NASCAR Cup Series (NCS) Championship at Phoenix Raceway but was forced into a green-white-checkered finish due to a late-race caution. During those critical laps, he was unable to advance, allowing Kyle Larson to secure his second championship. The disappointment was evident as Hamlin sat on pit road visibly upset.

Hamlin then faced a greater personal tragedy when a fire broke out in his family home on December 28. The incident resulted in serious injuries to his 75-year-old father, Dennis, who passed away two days later. His mother, Mary Lou, survived and is currently recovering.

When asked about how these experiences have affected his perspective, Hamlin responded with reflection.

“Yeah, the easy thing to say is ‘poor me,’”

Hamlin said.

“I still have a fantastic life and a great family. A lot of people go through tragedies. What happened with my family in the off season was highly publicized.”

He acknowledged that many others in the NASCAR community face hardships that go unrecognized and emphasized the role adversity plays in character development.

“There’s probably tons of those stories of crew members that happened to them in the off season, and during the season, that nobody knows about. Everyone has their times when they have to go through tough moments. Those are really building moments of your character.”

Hamlin’s Determination to Overcome Injury and Pursue Goals

Looking ahead, Hamlin recognizes the 2024 season could unfold in different ways, depending on his mindset and discipline in managing his health and focus.

“This season for me can certainly go one of two ways. It depends on which way I decide to turn. My focus is keeping this thing on the right track and making sure I spend these last couple of years accomplishing everything I want to achieve.”

Despite the setbacks of his Denny Hamlin shoulder injury and personal losses, he remains determined to compete and aim for success in the NASCAR Cup Series.
