F1 Boss Hints Changes After Max Verstappen Criticizes 2026 Rules

Formula One Group CEO Stefano Domenicali has disclosed that he recently held a constructive discussion with Max Verstappen regarding the Dutch driver’s criticism of the 2026 F1 regulations. The meeting laid the groundwork for future talks involving the FIA and the teams to assess issues raised by Verstappen and other drivers, primarily focusing on how the new rules might affect driving styles.

Much of the attention during the 2026 F1 pre-season has centered on the upcoming regulations expected to be introduced at the Australian Grand Prix, but drivers’ reactions have drawn significant headlines. Four-time world champion Max Verstappen notably described the planned changes as “anti-racing” and voiced doubts about his future in the sport if he does not enjoy piloting the new cars.

F1 Leadership Open to Revisiting Rule Adjustments

Responding to Verstappen’s concerns, Domenicali assured that the feedback from drivers is being taken seriously and that the governing bodies are ready to reconsider rules if necessary. He emphasized that the new models require a shift in how drivers approach racing without compromising the essence of competitive driving.

“I had a very constructive meeting with him [Verstappen], and we will have a very constructive meeting with the FIA and with the teams to highlight the point of view as to what he believes needs to be done, which is to keep the driving style at the centre without changing the approach,” said Domenicali. Domenicali elaborated that Formula 1 has always been a platform for showcasing skill under varying circumstances and assured that any issues that arise from the new regulations will prompt an appropriate response.

“F1 has always been a place where everyone can show that they are the best in all conditions, drivers, engineers, mechanics, the whole system. Of course, if there will be something to react to, we’re going to react.”

He urged fans and stakeholders not to react hastily before the new era begins, noting that apprehension over significant regulation changes is a familiar pattern in the sport’s history.

Verstappen’s Role and Future in Formula One

Domenicali reaffirmed that Max Verstappen remains a key figure in Formula One’s future, even as the driver has expressed some uncertainty about the length of his career moving forward. The F1 chief highlighted Verstappen’s passion and commitment to the sport, which sets him apart from others.

“We know Max will be part of the future of Formula 1. It is very important we listen to him, as we do with all of the top drivers. He has a way of saying something that can be interpreted in a certain way. But I can guarantee to you that Max wants and does care about Formula 1 more than anyone else.”

Max Verstappen has previously indicated that he does not plan to continue racing in F1 indefinitely, preferring to dedicate more time to his family and possibly explore other motorsport ventures. Speculation also surrounds his potential retirement at Red Bull, potentially aligning with the end of his current contract in 2028.

Implications of the Dialogue on F1’s Regulatory Path

The engagement between Domenicali and Verstappen signifies an important moment of reflection within Formula One as it approaches a major shift in technical regulations. The willingness to listen to top drivers and the readiness to adjust the rules underlines the sport’s commitment to maintaining competitive integrity and driver satisfaction. As the 2026 rule implementation draws nearer, the conversations with stakeholders like Verstappen will likely influence how Formula One balances innovation with the traditions of racing excellence.
