Fabio Quartararo Withdraws from Sepang Test After Crash

French MotoGP rider Fabio Quartararo withdrew from the ongoing Sepang test after suffering a heavy crash during the morning session at Turn 5. The accident on the first day of the 2026 MotoGP pre-season testing raised immediate concerns about his fitness to continue.

Medical teams quickly attended to Quartararo and transported him to the circuit’s medical center for assessment. Despite a fractured finger and arm discomfort, he impressively returned to the track later that day, managing to finish eighth and remain competitive with Marc Márquez’s leading pace.

Injury Forces Tough Decision to Sit Out Remaining Tests

Though determined to push through, Quartararo ultimately chose to withdraw from the last two days of the Sepang session to prioritize recovery. He explained the choice in an interview, stating,

“I have a bit of pain in my arm, but the finger is broken, so we decided to stop here and not take part in the next two days of the test. I think it’s better this way,”

Quartararo said.

He further addressed the disappointment but emphasized the importance of healing ahead of the season start:

“Of course, if it were a race weekend, I could continue, but it doesn’t make sense to push through for two more days. It’s a bit unfortunate because I obviously want to ride, but it’s better for the first race. My arm is fine, but it’s best for my finger,”

he added.

Details of the Crash and Its Impact on Preparations

Reflecting on the incident, Quartararo described the crash as sudden and severe:

“I crashed pretty fast; I don’t really know what happened. But it was a fast crash, and I ended up far in the gravel. Unfortunately, I wasn’t lucky today, but it could have been much worse.”

Prior to the crash, Quartararo had been gathering vital testing miles during the shakedown last week alongside Yamaha teammates, rookies, and test pilots. Despite progress, the new Yamaha motorcycle still demands further development before the season commences.

Looking Ahead: Recovery and Upcoming Tests

The MotoGP community is closely monitoring Quartararo’s condition as he prepares for the next scheduled testing in Thailand on February 21 and 22, shortly before the season opener. His return is highly anticipated by teams, fans, and rivals, as the 2026 MotoGP season is expected to be fiercely contested with notable challengers like Marc Márquez and rising stars present on the grid.

Quartararo’s decision to prioritize healing following his crash underscores the delicate balance riders must manage between determination and safety in pre-season testing phases, illustrating the challenges that come with preparing for a demanding championship ahead.
