Marc Marquez, the current MotoGP world champion, has shared his first insights on his physical condition since returning to racing activities following a severe shoulder injury. He made his comeback at the Sepang test, marking a significant step in his Marc Marquez shoulder recovery journey after being sidelined for several months.
During the Indonesian Grand Prix last October, the 32-year-old Spaniard experienced a complicated shoulder fracture caused by a collision, which forced him to miss the rest of the MotoGP season. His absence from the track lasted 121 days before the April test sessions in Sepang.
Early Riding and Performance at Sepang Test
Marquez cautiously limited his track time, completing a total of 53 laps with short stints to protect his recovering shoulder. Despite this cautious approach, he finished the day as the fastest rider, topping the timesheets by a margin of 0.256 seconds. This result came as he gradually worked on rebuilding both his fitness and confidence on the bike.
The rider reflected on his first day back, saying,
“Yeah, it was a tricky day in the morning, especially to get the feedback,”
highlighting the challenges of adjusting to riding again after the injury. He mentioned that the initial discomfort caused a slower start to his testing program. However, as the day went on,
“I started to feel more relaxed on the bike,”
which encouraged him to push harder towards the end of the session.

He continued,
“For that reason, I pushed in the last part of the practice. Let’s see how I get up tomorrow and try and survive this test.”

Focus on Shoulder Function and Race Preparedness
Marquez emphasized that his primary concern remains the functional recovery of his shoulder. He explained that the main priority is ensuring the joint operates well rather than immediate top speed.
“The most important thing is that the shoulder is working in a good way,”
he stated, noting that physical readiness directly influences performance.
To prepare fully for upcoming Grand Prix events, Marquez outlined the necessity of both physical and technical work. He said,
“I need laps. I need to continue with my preparations for the GP, and preparation means everything: it means the technical side and the physical side.”
While he acknowledged the speed was present during his initial runs, he pointed out the importance of consistency given his current fitness level.
He also mentioned limiting his runs during the first day to keep his shoulder fresh, sharing,
“But it’s true that the runs were super short, two, three laps, because I just tried to keep this shoulder fresh for the next two days.”

Testing Ducati’s New Aerodynamic Enhancements
Alongside his Ducati team-mate Pecco Bagnaia, Marquez tested a new, innovative aerodynamic package during the Sepang sessions. Although he remained cautious about disclosing specific advantages of the updated design, he acknowledged the significant effect it has on the bike’s balance and handling.
He stressed the need for patience as they adapt to these aerodynamic changes. Marquez explained,
“Of course, you feel a big change on the aero,”
and added,
“It’s true that we need to be super patient with new aerodynamics, because the bike balance changes a lot.”
Considering the upcoming Thai GP and the closely scheduled Thai test, Marquez stated that making smart decisions regarding the aero package is crucial. He said,
“It’s there where we still need to work. It will be important to decide well, because the fact that the Thai test and Thai GP are super close, we need to be super clever here with all of the things.”

Implications for Marc Marquez’s Return and Season Ahead
Marc Marquez’s update signals promising progress in his shoulder recovery just months after a major injury. His ability to post the fastest time at Sepang while limiting track time highlights a cautious but optimistic approach to regaining full race fitness. The testing of Ducati’s experimental aero package alongside Pecco Bagnaia also shows his commitment to adapting to new technical developments while managing his physical condition.
As Marquez continues his preparation for the forthcoming Grand Prix rounds, his cautious optimism suggests that the focus will remain on building consistency and shoulder strength. Fans and teams alike will be watching closely to see how quickly he can return to the peak form that has previously dominated MotoGP circuits.
