ST. PETERSBURG, FL. — As the IndyCar Series season opener approached, fans gathered in St. Petersburg for a day of motorsport excitement despite rainy weather disrupting initial plans. While Friday’s practice session for drivers was canceled due to rain, enthusiasm remained high among spectators eager for the weekend’s events in this Florida city.
Weekend Festivities Offer More Than Just Racing
Beyond the IndyCar anticipation, Saturday’s schedule includes the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series along with a variety of food vendors and fan experiences. Attendees will have the chance to interact with their favorite drivers, adding a personal touch to the race weekend atmosphere.
Drivers Reflect on the Unique Challenges and Excitement of the Circuit
Sting Ray Robb, representing Juncos Hollinger Racing, shared his passion for the sport, stating,
“If you’re not watching IndyCar, you’re missing out. It’s the greatest form of motor sports in the world in my opinion,”
emphasizing his commitment to making an impact this weekend.
Robb added a lighthearted remark about his name and career choice:
“The name helps. Obviously, with a name like Sting Ray, that’s hard not to want to be a race car driver. It was gonna be really hard to be an accountant or a lawyer, something like that. Not very many people are trusting a kid named Sting Ray Robb,”
highlighting how his identity aligns with his racing ambitions.
The upcoming race takes place on a 1.8-mile circuit weaving through downtown St. Petersburg’s streets and parts of the Albert Whitted Airport runway, providing a diverse track layout. Kyffin Simpson of Chip Ganassi Racing described the track’s uniqueness:
“We race part on an airstrip and then part on streets, so it’s two very different parts of the track and each have their own unique challenges.”
Simpson also expressed his enthusiasm for the competitive spirit, saying,
“What’s not to love about this? Really, it’s the speed, it’s the competition.”
Christian Rasmussen, driving for Ed Carpenter Racing, spoke about his aspirations:

“I’m very fortunate I get to live my dream,”
and added,
“I’m looking to stay in IndyCar for a long time and build my career here and see where it takes me.”
IndyCar Leadership Praises St. Petersburg as Ideal Venue
Doug Boles, president of the IndyCar Series, praised Florida’s role as host, explaining,
“What we love about coming to Florida, the weather’s good and this community makes it more than a race; they make it an event. That’s why I think this will always be the opener for us here in the U.S.”
Anticipation Builds for the Firestone Grand Prix Race
