George Russell Shocked by Mercedes’ Astonishing F1 Pace

George Russell expressed surprise at just how dominant Mercedes’ pace was during qualifying for the 2024 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park. Though the Silver Arrows expected to be fast, Russell admitted the team had not anticipated the overwhelming advantage their W17 car showcased on the track.

Russell and Mercedes controlled the weekend’s early sessions, setting a relentless pace in Free Practice 3 which foreshadowed their qualifying performance. Throughout all three parts of the session, the British driver consistently outpaced his competitors, revealing the full potential of Mercedes’ new car.

Dominance Displayed Through Qualifying Performance

In qualifying, Russell established an enormous gap between himself and the nearest rivals, frequently exceeding six-tenths of a second on each flying lap. His final Q3 lap was particularly remarkable, finishing nearly eight-tenths clear of the next-best time, illustrating the performance leap Mercedes has achieved this season.

Following qualifying, Russell shared his satisfaction with his effort.

“Yeah, it felt very good, to be honest,”

he said about his lap.

“The whole session felt very clean, very tidy, no mistakes, and yeah, just how I wanted to start this weekend really.”

He credited the team’s hard work at the Mercedes factories in Brixworth and Brackley for the impressive package but conceded the full extent of the car’s capabilities took them by surprise.

“But I think we knew as a team, or we thought as a team, we had a really good package beneath us, and it’s been so much hard work from everyone in Brixworth and Brackley to deliver this. But I don’t think we quite thought it was that good. And also, to have Kimi next to me here as well is really great.”

Unexpected Gap to Competitors and Car’s Handling Characteristics

Russell was taken aback by the size of the margin between Mercedes and other teams, attributing some of their advantage to the cooler weather conditions during qualifying. He highlighted the W17’s exceptional handling and agility as a key factor in their pace, praising its responsiveness and contrasting it with the previous season’s cars.

“Yeah, definitely,” Russell said regarding his surprise about the gap.

“I think the conditions also came into our favour. We know we’re better in these cooler conditions and as the track temp dropped, we always seemed to find more lap time.”

He elaborated on the combination of power and drivability:

“We’ve got a really great engine beneath us. However, I think we’ve also got a really amazing car beneath us, and I think that probably hasn’t been highlighted enough in the press these past few weeks.”

Russell reflected on the experience of driving the new cars:

“The car, from the off, Kimi and I both said it felt great to drive. We’re enjoying the smaller cars, the lighter cars, and yeah, perfect way to start Melbourne.”

He described the car’s agility with enthusiasm:

“Well, the cars are more agile and you’re sort of sliding them around a bit more. It’s easier to lock up and run wide, lose the rear.”

Despite challenging windy and gusty conditions on the day, Russell conveyed his enjoyment, comparing the new cars favorably to last year’s models.

“It wasn’t easy conditions out there today, it was quite windy, quite gusty, but I’m enjoying that. It feels more like a go-kart compared to last year. It felt like a bouncing bus, to be honest. It wasn’t as fun to drive.”

Reflection on New Regulations and Outlook for the Season

Russell acknowledged there are diverse opinions on the new technical regulations introduced this season but believes the changes represent a step forward for Formula 1. He expressed optimism that the updated cars offer improved racing and driver satisfaction.

So, I think there are lots of mixed views on the new regs as a whole, but I do think the car regulations for everyone are definitely a step forward compared to what we’ve had for the past, what, eight years now.
