Hamilton Admits Ferrari Engineer Change Is “Detrimental” Ahead

Lewis Hamilton has openly recognized the negative impact caused by Ferrari’s recent adjustment to his race engineering team as he prepares for the 2026 Formula 1 season. After a difficult debut year with the Scuderia, the seven-time world champion now faces uncertainty due to a reshuffle within his engineering support.

Riccardo Adami, Hamilton’s engineer during last season, has been reassigned to Ferrari’s academy, with Carlo Santi temporarily taking over trackside duties. Hamilton suggested this setup may be short-lived since the permanent engineer currently appears to be on gardening leave, adding instability early in the new campaign.

Hamilton Reflects on the Difficulty of Engineer Transition

Speaking during testing in Bahrain, Hamilton described the decision involving Adami as “pretty difficult” and expressed gratitude for Adami’s commitment throughout their challenging year together. He described his current situation as far from ideal, with changes pending after only a few races.

“It’s actually quite a difficult era, because it’s not long-term, the solution that I currently have – it’s only a few races, and so early on into the season it’s going to all be switching up again and I’ll have to learn to work with someone new,”

Hamilton explained.

The driver added,

“So that’s detrimental for me too, going into a season where you want to arrive with people that have done multiple seasons, that have been through thick and thin, and I can’t.”

“Firstly, with Riccardo it was a pretty difficult decision to make, and I’m really, really grateful for all the effort he put in last year, and his patience – it was a difficult year for us all,”

“But it is the situation that I’m faced with, and I’ll try and do the best that I can. The team is trying to do the best they can to make it as seamless as possible.”

Implications of Engineering Instability on Hamilton’s Ferrari Prospects

Hamilton’s acknowledgment of the engineering upheaval highlights a significant obstacle as he enters a new season with Ferrari. Stability between driver and engineer is crucial for success in Formula 1, and the frequent changes could hinder their performance. Meanwhile, his concerns regarding power unit parity emphasize the intense scrutiny and competition that continues within the sport.

As Ferrari’s plans for the season unfold, establishing a solid engineering partnership will be essential for Hamilton’s pursuit of further victories. The situation also signals the challenges teams face in adapting structures quickly while aiming to maintain high performance on the track.
