Austin, Texas — Harrison Burton’s first year with Sam Hunt Racing began with a difficult stretch, marked by consecutive crashes that left him struggling in the points standings as the NASCAR season got underway. Facing unexpected setbacks, Burton now confronts considerable pressure as he aims to climb out of the early deficit.
Adapting to New Competition Pressure in NASCAR
Burton acknowledged the rough start during an interview at Circuit of the Americas, emphasizing the urgency to recover quickly. He said,
“Obviously, it sucks that we’ve got off to a bad start to our year, and now we have to dig out of that hole,”
expressing both frustration and determination.
He also pointed out the unique pressure this new season carries, especially with NASCAR eliminating the win-and-in format for The Chase.
“But that’s what’s really neat about it, is for me as a driver, I feel more pressure week three than I have in years, right, showing up to the racetrack. We’ve had bad luck — like we talked about — the last two weeks, and now it’s like, okay, we better get on top of it. We’re gonna find ourselves in a pretty big debt on the points side,”
Burton added, highlighting how the stakes have intensified early on.
Performance Setbacks and Points Standings
This season, Burton rejoined the Toyota Racing organization, yet early results have been disappointing. After scoring just eight points at Daytona International Speedway due to a crash that left him 29th, he earned only two points at EchoPark Speedway where another early wreck hindered his chances. These incidents have pushed him down to 34th in the driver standings, placing him 31 points behind Brandon Jones, who currently holds the last spot above the early cutline.
Burton’s Approach to Overcoming Adversity
Despite setbacks, Burton remains confident in the speed of his equipment and his own capabilities on the track.

“The last two weeks, I felt like we’ve brought fast race cars,”
he said.
“Qualified well at Atlanta, and just was kind of right in the mix when some mistakes happened.”
He acknowledged the unpredictable nature of racing, noting,
“So I don’t know what to do different other than just keep going. And I’ve been on both sides of it. I’ve been really fortunate at superspeedway-style races, and I’ve been really unfortunate, and it tends to even itself out.”
Upcoming Races Present Opportunity to Improve Standings
With races scheduled at Circuit of the Americas, Phoenix Raceway, and Las Vegas Speedway approaching, Burton has a chance to improve his position. His previous strong performances on road courses like Road America and Watkins Glen offer a promising foundation as the series progresses to tracks favoring his driving strengths.
The Sam Hunt Racing team continues to provide competitive vehicles, which could be key in helping Burton make gains as the season moves forward.
Racing with Newfound Playoff-Like Intensity
Burton expressed excitement about the heightened intensity the series now carries.
“I like that showing up to COTA, I feel anxious and nervous like it’s a playoff race,”
he said.
“I think that kind of feeling is fun, and it’s what the drivers seem to want, it’s what the fans seem to want. So let’s do it.”
This mindset shows Burton’s readiness to confront the challenges ahead and leverage the pressure to enhance his performance in the evolving NASCAR competition format.
