Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion and Legacy Motor Club owner Jimmie Johnson is returning to off-road racing by entering the upcoming BF Goodrich Mint 400, a renowned event in American motorsports. Johnson will pilot the No. 84 Carvana 1Nine Industries-built Trick Truck, competing for Terrible Herbst Motorsports at this prestigious Nevada desert race.
Continuing its longstanding partnership with Johnson, Carvana will sponsor his entry in this challenging off-road competition.
From Desert Racing to NASCAR Stardom
Before rising to fame in NASCAR, Johnson honed his skills navigating rugged off-road terrain in Southern California. Starting with motorcycle racing and off-road trucks, he earned a class championship in the Mickey Thompson Off-Road Racing Series. His early experiences in desert racing helped develop the resilience and driving instincts that propelled him into top-tier stock car competitions.
Returning to the Mint 400 marks a meaningful moment for Johnson as he reconnects with the racing discipline that originally shaped his career and competitive mindset.
Meaningful Partnership and Team Dynamics
Johnson’s co-driver and navigator will be San Diego native Jason Duncan, who shares the task of tackling the grueling race. Terrible Herbst Motorsports, a respected team rooted deeply in Nevada’s off-road racing scene, brings decades of desert racing expertise to this collaboration.
Troy Herbst, the team owner, expressed high praise for Johnson’s capabilities and the significance of this partnership.
Jimmie Johnson represents excellence, adaptability, and credibility across every form of motorsport,
said Troy Herbst.
The Mint 400 is an iconic event, and teaming up with Jimmie and Terrible Herbst Motorsports allows us to tell a powerful story about legacy, grit, and pushing limits in new environments.
A Historic Event and What It Represents
First held in 1967, the Mint 400 is recognized as one of the most demanding tests of driver skill and machine endurance in motorsports. Johnson joins a distinguished list of legendary racers who have challenged the Nevada desert’s toughness in pursuit of victory.
Reflecting on his return, Johnson emphasized his connection to off-road racing:
Off-road racing is where I learned how to race,
said Johnson.
The Mint 400 is raw, demanding, and unpredictable—and that’s what makes it special. To come back and do it with Carvana and a team like Terrible Herbst Motorsports, in a trick truck, is incredibly meaningful to me.
Looking Ahead to the 2026 Mint 400
The Mint 400 is scheduled to take place from March 4 to March 8, 2026, in Las Vegas. The race will be broadcast live on SPEED SPORT 1 and available through various streaming platforms, featuring dynamic camera angles from drones, helicopters, and vehicle-mounted equipment. Johnson’s participation is expected to add excitement and renewed attention to this legendary desert race.
