Jimmie Johnson Takes Crew Chief Role for IndyCar Legend Franchitti

Jimmie Johnson will step into a crew chief role for the first time during the NASCAR Truck Series race at St. Petersburg on February 28, guiding Dario Franchitti’s return to NASCAR competition. Johnson, a seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, will lead the pit box for Franchitti, a celebrated IndyCar veteran making his first NASCAR start since 2008.

Jimmie Johnson Prepares to Lead Dario Franchitti in Truck Series Debut

Johnson revealed to Above the Yellow Line Media that he is eager to support Franchitti and praised the quality of Tricon Garage, which provides the No. 1 Toyota for the event. Franchitti’s return is backed by primary sponsorship from Dollar Tree, and Johnson personally encouraged the IndyCar legend to compete in this race.

“I’m super excited, Tricon has incredible equipment,”

Johnson said to Above the Yellow Line Media on Sunday.

“They’ve put together a really nice opportunity for us to run Dario.”

Franchitti’s last NASCAR race took place in 2008, and he previously completed one Truck Series start in 2007, finishing 33rd at Martinsville. He is best known for his success in IndyCar, including four championships and three Indianapolis 500 victories, while also having competed in 10 NASCAR Cup Series races.

“I talked him into driving a truck, and he said, ‘If I’m driving, I need you on the box,’”

Johnson explained.

“So I’ll be on the box doing my best to not mess him up.”

Johnson’s Transition from Driver to Crew Chief and Owner

This upcoming race will mark Johnson’s debut as a crew chief, after a two-decade career as a full-time driver in the NASCAR Cup Series from 2000 to 2020. He further transitioned into team ownership last November by acquiring a stake in Petty GMS Motorsports, now known as Legacy Motor Club.

Johnson continues to race part-time and recently finished 29th in the Daytona 500. He also placed third at Daytona and 40th in the Coca-Cola 600 earlier this year. Johnson announced that his final NASCAR Cup Series start will be the 2027 Daytona 500.

“Next February, I’ll make my final start in the Cup Series at Daytona,”

Johnson stated, as reported by Jayski’s.

“I’ve been very fortunate to accomplish more than I ever imagined in this sport.”

Significance of Johnson’s New Role and Franchitti’s Return

Johnson’s move to crew chief signals a new chapter in his career, applying his extensive racing knowledge from behind the pit box. His mentorship could play a key role in easing Franchitti’s comeback to NASCAR competition after a lengthy absence. This collaboration also highlights Tricon Garage’s competitive presence with strong sponsorship support, aiming to make a notable impact at St. Petersburg.

The upcoming race will be closely watched by fans eager to see how Johnson’s leadership influences Franchitti’s performance and how this partnership might evolve in future events.
