Joey Logano Breaks Richard Petty’s Drafting Track Record

During the recent Cup Series race at EchoPark Speedway in Atlanta, Joey Logano achieved a significant milestone by surpassing a long-standing record held by seven-time Cup Series champion Richard Petty. This accomplishment highlights Logano’s consistent dominance on drafting tracks in NASCAR.

Leading Consistently Across Multiple Races

On the opening lap of Sunday’s race, Logano overtook Tyler Reddick to take the lead and maintained a presence at the front throughout several laps. This effort marked Logano’s 20th straight Cup Series race at a drafting track in which he led at least one lap, breaking Petty’s previous record of 19 consecutive races. Logano first matched the record during the Daytona 500 earlier this season before setting a new standard at EchoPark Speedway.

Nearly Unbroken Streak of Leading Laps on Drafting Tracks

Joey Logano has led laps in 36 of the last 38 Cup Series races on drafting circuits. The only exceptions came in two 2022 events: the July race at Atlanta and the October event at Talladega. At Talladega, Logano chose a cautious approach by starting near the back to avoid crashes, which resulted in a 27th-place finish after a mostly incident-free race.

“I’m not doing that ever again,”

Logano remarked after returning to Talladega in 2023.

“No. They never wrecked. I finished 30th when I raced. I didn’t race, and I finished 30th, so I might as well race this year again and still have a chance to win.”

Return to Aggressive Racing Pays Off

Abandoning his previous cautious tactic, Logano resumed competing aggressively at drafting tracks. He secured second place in the 2023 Daytona 500 and won the 2023 spring event at EchoPark Speedway. In 2024, he continued these strong performances by finishing fifth in the Daytona 500 and winning the playoff race at EchoPark. While he faced some setbacks with finishes outside the top 25 at Talladega, Daytona, and EchoPark, Logano consistently led laps driving the No. 22 Team Penske Ford.

Record-Breaking Achievement Enhances Legacy

Breaking Richard Petty’s record solidifies Logano’s reputation as one of NASCAR’s top drivers on drafting tracks. His continued success adds significant chapters to what many anticipate will be a Hall of Fame career. As the season progresses, how Logano builds on this momentum could shape his legacy and impact future Cup Series races.
