Joan Mir Admits Honda’s MotoGP Top 5 Hope Amid Ducati Gap

After the recent Sepang test, Joan Mir shared a candid perspective on Honda’s ambitions for the 2023 MotoGP season, highlighting ongoing challenges with competing against Ducati’s dominance. The Spanish rider expressed mixed feelings of hope and frustration, revealing the gap that still exists despite progress made by Honda.

Mixed Results from Honda’s Sepang Test Effort

Mir’s experience on the Malaysian Sepang circuit was turbulent, ultimately leaving him somewhat disappointed. Initial optimism was fueled by Aleix Espargaró, Honda’s test rider, who praised the bike’s potential in the Shakedown phase. Nevertheless, the actual performance during the official three-day session exposed several difficulties for Mir and his team.

The revamped Honda RC213V initially showed improvements in key areas such as engine performance and braking, but it soon became apparent that rivals had also made substantial headway. This meant Honda’s developments weren’t enough to close the competitive gap, forcing the team to reassess their position.

Testing Setbacks and Performance Details

Joan Mir managed to finish within the top 10, shaving six-tenths off his previous Malaysian Grand Prix lap time. However, his frustration was clear in post-test comments.

We tried various setups that didn’t yield the results we wanted, forcing us to pivot to an alternative plan, which cost us valuable time,

Mir explained.

In the afternoon, we experimented with a different clutch configuration, but it failed to perform as expected, leaving us puzzled. Such setbacks are part of testing, but they impacted my day and hindered my ability to go for a time attack.

Despite these obstacles, Mir’s best laps ranged between 1:58.00 and 1:58.05, yet some laps stretched into the 1:59 range.

My pace isn’t terrible, but we still face limitations with grip, especially in the heat,

he said.

Conversely, when conditions are more favorable, my RC213V performs much better. We need to put in hard work to break that 1:58 barrier, as achieving the necessary grip is crucial for maintaining tire freshness over multiple laps.

Looking Ahead to Thailand and Honda’s Development Challenges

Mir remains cautiously hopeful about Honda’s ability to contend with several manufacturers but admits Ducati remains a tough target this season. Ahead of the next test in Thailand scheduled for February 21-22, he offered a measured appraisal of Honda’s standing within the field.

If we disregard the pace of the Márquez brothers and Bagnaia, we were relatively strong. I believe Ducati has made strides, just as we have, but given their pace, it will be tough for us. We need to keep pushing because I think we have more room for improvement compared to them. We’re not targeting Ducati right now, but we are closing in on the other brands.

While progress in engine and braking has been encouraging, Mir highlighted limited advances in aerodynamics and persistent grip issues that constrain overall performance.

When I attempted a time attack, it went reasonably well, and I believe we can improve further,

he noted.

But if we were to race tomorrow, I believe we could aim for a top 5 finish, but nothing beyond that.

Implications for Honda and the MotoGP Season Ahead

As the opening of the MotoGP season approaches, Honda and Joan Mir confront a challenging reality amid rapid advancements by competitors. The team’s ability to leverage development gains while overcoming grip deficiencies will be crucial. Although Mir is closing in on several rivals, bridging the gap to Ducati remains a daunting task. The upcoming Thailand test is expected to offer further insights into Honda’s potential trajectory and whether they can elevate their MotoGP performance to challenge for top honors.
