Joan Mir has openly expressed deep concerns about Honda’s 2026 MotoGP motorcycle, revealing that the team is struggling with serious grip issues that could jeopardize their competitiveness next season. After the recent pre-season testing sessions held in Buriram and Sepang, Mir’s assessment paints a troubling picture for Honda as they aim to compete in the 2026 championship.
Testing Results Expose Underwhelming Performance Despite High Expectations
Following a 2025 season that showed some promise, Honda’s prospects for 2026 had initially raised hopes among fans and analysts. However, Mir’s performance in testing fell short of expectations when he ranked only tenth on combined timesheets at Buriram. The main source of frustration lies in the bike’s persistent difficulty in maintaining adequate grip, which Mir regards as a serious threat to the team’s chances in the upcoming races.
Mir pointed out that although the rear tire’s stiff carcass at Buriram was challenging, grip problems were also apparent during the Sepang tests.
“Honestly, in this track, for some reason we found more difficulties than in Sepang, especially for myself,”
Mir said, highlighting the bike’s ongoing limitations.
“I could not put the bike in the same place in terms of potential, in general.”
Comparisons with Rivals Amplify Honda’s Struggles
As the competition intensifies, Mir’s dissatisfaction serves as a warning sign, especially when contrasting Honda’s current status with front-runners such as Ducati and Aprilia. He admitted that those teams are operating on a higher level, underlining the gap Honda needs to close.

“At the moment, I think Ducati and Aprilia are in a different level,”
Mir stated, indicating serious concerns for Honda’s competitiveness.
“We’ve improved, but the others are probably the same or more,”
he lamented, reflecting the uphill battle the team faces.
Mir Calls for a Fundamental Transformation to Address Grip Challenges
Recognizing that incremental tweaks won’t suffice, Mir advocates for a radical overhaul of the bike’s design to resolve the grip crisis. This call for a “revolution” underscores the extent of Honda’s predicament and the urgent need for innovation ahead of the 2026 season.
“In terms of grip, we need a revolution,”
Mir declared emphatically, emphasizing the critical situation.
The Impact of Limited Development on Honda’s Prospects
Last year, Honda managed to improve sufficiently to exit the concession rankings, but this progress came with constraints. The team faces an additional challenge this year as they are unable to introduce a completely new engine for 2026, instead adapting last year’s model. This limitation hampers their potential for breakthrough improvements.
“It’s true that now we tried different things, but not a different concept,”
Mir explained, signaling that Honda is still behind in catching up with rivals’ advancements.
Looking Ahead: The Urgency of Honda’s Response to Stay Competitive
As the countdown to the 2026 MotoGP season continues, the pressure is mounting on Honda to resolve these grip issues and regain a competitive edge. Joan Mir’s candid remarks reveal significant anxiety within the team as they face rival manufacturers progressing rapidly. The coming months will be critical to see whether Honda can transform its bike enough to challenge top contenders or if the current crisis will hinder their hopes of success.
