Johann Zarco Hints Barry Baltus Could Join Yamaha MotoGP Seat

Johann Zarco has hinted that Barry Baltus might emerge as an unexpected candidate for a Yamaha MotoGP ride in 2027, amid a rapidly evolving rider market ahead of the 2026 MotoGP Championship season. As teams prepare for upcoming contract decisions, Baltus has entered discussions alongside other promising Moto2 talents for a future spot on the premier racing grid.

The MotoGP entry list for 2027 remains uncertain, with established figures like David Alonso, Dani Holgado, and 2025 Moto2 runner-up Manuel Gonzalez already considered strong candidates for promotion. However, Zarco’s remarks have introduced Baltus, a currently less-highlighted rider, as someone worth watching.

Barry Baltus’s Progress and Yamaha Connections

After securing third place in the 2025 Moto2 championship, Barry Baltus has gained attention for his steady improvement and potential to advance to MotoGP. Zarco, who began his own MotoGP journey with Yamaha’s Tech3 team in 2017, expressed optimism about Baltus following a similar career path.

Connections between Baltus’s current Moto2 team Fantic and Yamaha—facilitated by Éric de Seynes, who oversees Fantic—could help organize a future transfer for Baltus. Zarco highlighted the importance of consistent Moto2 performance as a key factor in earning a MotoGP contract.

“It proves consistency, and so on. He’s made a big step forward and he’ll be there this year. You can’t say he’s lacking anything. He’s following a normal progression, you could say.”

Further commenting on Baltus’s prospects, Zarco noted the potential influence of Éric de Seynes and cautioned that success will depend on maintaining strong results.

“Since Éric de Seynes took over Fantic, we’ve been saying that maybe his path will lead him more towards Yamaha. It’s just casual talk, but why not? That said, if he has a bad season and isn’t in contention for the title, he won’t get a contract. But since he’s serious in training and has real talent, because he’s strong on the bike, I’m confident. He’s developing well, even on the 1000cc bikes; they’re fast. I honestly think he’ll manage his season well.”

Johann Zarco Confirmed to Continue with LCR Honda Through 2027

While many rider seats for 2027 remain undecided due to multiple contract expirations, Johann Zarco’s plans are confirmed. The two-time Moto2 World Champion will remain on the MotoGP grid, racing for LCR Honda through the 2027 season following a contract extension through 2026 and 2027.

However, this extension reportedly occurred without involvement from several Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) executives, some of whom are dissatisfied with Zarco’s renewal. Former HRC boss Livio Suppo publicly stated he would not have re-signed Zarco, citing the rider’s age and record in MotoGP as concerns.

The Broader Impact of Rider Market Movements in MotoGP

The ongoing flux in MotoGP’s rider market highlights the challenges teams face in balancing emerging talent with experienced veterans. Zarco’s suggestion of Barry Baltus as a Yamaha prospect demonstrates how promising Moto2 riders can gain attention through consistent results and strategic industry connections.

Given Zarco’s own career trajectory from Yamaha’s Tech3 team to LCR Honda, Baltus’s development and potential arrival into MotoGP will be closely observed by fans and analysts. The 2026 Moto2 season will be pivotal for Baltus, as his results could determine whether Yamaha or other manufacturers extend him a MotoGP contract in the near future.
