Johann Zarco faced a challenging start at the opening MotoGP race of the 2026 season in Thailand, where he earned his first points with LCR Honda but just missed the top 10 finish he had hoped for. Despite this, Zarco remains optimistic about the path Honda has taken during the winter and believes the ongoing development will lead to improved results as the season progresses.
Early Challenges and a Focused Mindset for Consistency
For Zarco, the winter break was a pivotal period focused on establishing a solid foundation for consistent performance, aiming to avoid the ups and downs he endured in the previous season. After the race in Buriram under extreme heat, Zarco acknowledged the difficulty of managing tire performance throughout the event, which impacted his competitiveness.
“I’m happy to start my championship, to get my few points,” he told the media after the race. “That’s already a first reward. I managed the race as best I could. I didn’t have more, I couldn’t have done more. The particular conditions of a very hot Sunday in Buriram put everyone’s tires to the test, surprising the driver from Cannes. I’m surprised by the big drop in performance at the end. I felt like I could control it, but even so, the [tire’s] performance completely plummeted.”

Progress and Signs of Honda’s Development
Since winter testing, the LCR Honda bike has undergone continuous refinement, though often overshadowed by the advancements of European manufacturers. Zarco, however, senses promising improvements that have revived some familiar traits of the Honda machine. He expressed satisfaction with the bike’s evolution but admitted that fully utilizing its capabilities remains a work in progress.
“The bike is better than last year’s anyway. I’ve even rediscovered some of that Honda DNA. If you ride it well, it can handle well.”

Despite these gains, Zarco explained that reaching the ideal riding zone still demands significant effort because the setup and balance necessary to maximize the motorcycle’s potential are not yet perfected.

“I can’t quite reach that zone yet. It’s still too much effort. We don’t yet have the setup, the balance that allows me to use this motorcycle better.”

The team atmosphere remains composed as they work to better understand Zarco’s needs, especially following recent tests in Thailand and Malaysia, which have contributed to greater consistency.
“No stress. I truly believe in the progress I can make from now on. Since Malaysia, we’ve tried a lot of things. But since Sunday’s tests in Thailand and this race, we’re much more consistent. And we’re trying to understand what Zarco needs. And it will come.”

Managing Emotions to Stabilize Performance Over the Next Two Years
Looking back on last season’s turbulent finish, Zarco has reflected on the importance of emotional control as he sets his sights on steady improvement in the upcoming seasons. He recognizes that maintaining patience and composure will be crucial for unlocking his full potential with Honda.
“I think I’ve experienced that before, but I often lost patience. I got annoyed. That’s where I want to improve over the two years I have left. The talent is there, the motivation is there, the physical fitness is there. It’s really controlling my emotions that will keep me from losing patience.”

After the first sprint race, Zarco also commented on his current approach to the bike, indicating he is still adapting.
“I’m more reacting to it than riding it.”

As Johann Zarco continues his 2026 campaign, his focus on rediscovering the Honda identity and building consistency demonstrates a thoughtful strategy amid early season challenges. The developments emerging from recent tests and the rider’s commitment to emotional control suggest that Zarco’s relationship with the LCR Honda bike could gain more stability, contributing to stronger performances as the year unfolds.
